Policy Analysis in Thailand
This chapter is in the book Policy Analysis in Thailand

Abstract

The chapter elaborates on the influence of business associations, officially and systematically, in the policy landscape in Thailand both at the national and provincial levels. It discusses business–government relations and the role of main associations in the country, especially after the establishment of the Joint Public and Private Sector Consultative Committee (JPPSCC) in 1981. This joint committee has been criticised for limiting membership to only three main business associations, namely the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Bankers’ Association. Its role has been increased in the current government under General Prayuth Chan-o-cha as elite businesses from the JPPSCC are appointed to be a special committee implementing the 20-Year National Strategy. This chapter also highlights that the Sino-Thai business conglomerates are invited to join the Pracharath scheme giving them an opportunity to determine the direction of Thailand economy and to establish so-called ‘hierarchical capitalism’.
