Abstract

This article surveys the great variety of names given to wood in early medieval texts based on royal and imperial documents between the late 7th century and the end of emperor Henry IV′s reign (1105) except emperor Ludwig I (813–840). The studies have to be understood as a kind of definition or “conceptual archaeology”. All the different names could be divided with regard to their legal status and function, especially the “forestis” and “gualdo”; others are the “silva”, “saltus”, “nemus”, “brogilus” and “lucus”. Beyond that the many possibilities of using forests had been explored, such as timber, pig breeding, hunting, bird catching, fishing and pasture. A statistic result was the increase of forest privileges at some periods including special additional rights.
