Abstract

Starting from the syllabic writing se-di-iš of the cardinal number “six” in a text published by al-Rawi and Roaf in 1984 the author re-examines the heavily discussed question of the initial sound of the Akkadian numbers “six” – “eight”. Previous studies trying to explain the occasional spellings with “s” as the initial sound for “seven” and “eight” already maintained the fact that the initial sound of one of these numbers has influenced the other. The new text has now brought the number “six” into this discussion and the question is from which of the three the initial “s” has its origins.
