Summary

The article deals with the analysis of epistemic responsibility in the context of media language from the epistemological, linguojuridical, and linguistic points of view and reveals the correlation of the epistemic responsibility with such categories as epistemic modality and evidentiality. We analyze the problem of distinguishing between belief and assertion playing an important role in determining a journalist’s legal liability for the truth value of information transmitted. There are two approaches to distinguishing between the two concepts in the Russian expert practice: formal-semantic and pragmatic ones. We provide some examples of qualifying the communicative status of utterances from Russian and German journalistic texts.
