The American Crystallographic Association (ACA) has selected Dan Rabinovich as the 2014 Elizabeth A. Wood Science Writing Award winner.  This award is given by the ACA every few years to people who have “written books and articles that bring science to the attention of a wider audience.” Cheryl Stevens, ACA President, said that Dan’s regular column, “Stamps International,” in IUPAC’s Chemistry International is noteworthy.

The award is named in honor of Elizabeth A. Wood, President of the ACA in 1957, and author of science books for lay readers. Successful nominees need not be crystallographers or scientists and “writing” could include artistic efforts such as museum displays (www.amercrystalassn.org). As the latest awardee, Dan joins an amazing group of writers: past winners include Dan Nocera (2011), Lisa Randall (2007), Oliver Sacks (2004), Ira Flatow (2002), K.C. Cole (2001), Robert Weinberg (1999), Robert M. Hazen (1998), and Roald Hoffmann (1997).

Dan’s “Stamps International” has been published regularly in Chemistry International since 2007. The series features interesting or visually appealing chemistry-related postage stamps from different countries and underscores the international character of both philately and our science. Dan is also a member of IUPAC’s Inorganic Chemistry Division. He attended the 2005 IUPAC General Assembly and Congress in Bejing China as a Young Observer. It was on that occasion that his combined passion for philately and the history of chemistry was transformed into the plan that shaped the “Stamps International” series.
