Novel Materials and Their Synthesis

The IUPAC International Conference on Novel Materials and Synthesis (NMS) was initiated in 2005 in Shanghai. Since then it was jointly held with International Symposium on Fine Chemistry and Functional Polymers (FCFP). The latter was incepted in 1987 in China and has been well established on an almost annual basis since its birth. In 2013, it was the ninth time for both conferences to be jointly held, which took place 17-22 October, at Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Fudan University was established in 1905 and is one of the top universities in China. Its goal is to become one of the top universities in the world. The name “Fudan” was from the Confucian Classics, which means unremitting effort and pursuit. It is situated in Shanghai City, on the west coast of the Pacific, the most dynamic metropolis in China, which held the World Expo in 2010 with the most visitors so far in the history of the event.

The NMS-IX & FCFP-XXIII was sponsored by IUPAC, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Molecular Catalysis and Innovative Materials, and National Basic Research Program of China (2007CB209700). Prof. Dr. Li Jin (Vice President, Fudan University), Prof. Dr. Stanislaw Slomkowski (IUPAC representative), Prof. Feixue Gao (Representative of NSFC), Prof. Heyong He (vice Dean, Department of Chemistry, Fudan University) and two cochairs delivered welcome and opening addresses on the morning of 18 October 2013.

About 300 participants from over 30 countries and areas joined the IUPAC NMS-IX & FCFP-XXIII. Some from industries were also present. The conference received over 300 abstracts. The conference mainly discussed innovative chiral and achiral compounds, bio- and biobased materials and composites, polymers such as conducting, semiconducting ones and supramoleculars, energy systems including fuel cells, solar cells, lithium batteries and supercapacitors and their key materials, nanomaterials such as one-, two-, and three-dimensional (1-D, 2-D and 3-D) nanomaterials, ceramic materials such as superconductors, electronic, diaelectronic, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, optoelectric and magnetic materials, carbon, fullerene, graphene and graphite, and other novel materials and new characterization methods. Famous scientists such as Prof. Ada Yonath from Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel (Nobel Laureate of Chemistry in 2009), Prof. Yi Cui (Stanford University, USA), Prof. Thomas (Tomasz) Dietl (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), Prof. Hiroshi Kitagawa (Kyoto University, Japan), Prof. Yasuhiro Nakazawa (Osaka University, Japan), Prof. Nikolay E. Nifantiev (Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia), Prof. Stanislaw Slomkowski (Polish Academy of Sci., Poland), Prof. Gordon G. Wallace (University of Wollongong, Australia), Prof. Volker Warzelhan (former president of BASF) from Carbon Composites Co., Germany, Prof. Huiming Cheng (Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Prof. Jiandong Ding (Fudan University, China) and Dr. Mario Malinconico gave lectures on their respective research work. Speakers from companies also introduced their latest development on novel materials.

For the second time, the IUPAC Prof. Jiang Novel Materials Youth Prize was awarded. The winners were Yuguo Guo from Institute of Chemistry, CAS, China and Xiongwen (David) Lou from National University of Singapore, Singapore. Each winner received a cash prize of USD 1000 and a refunding of return air-tickets to the conference. Three participants from Japan and Poland won the IUPAC Poster Prize. In addition, Distinguished Award 2013 for Novel Materials and their Synthesis was granted to Prof. Yi Cui (USA), Prof. Dr. Peter H.L. Notten (Belgium), Prof. Dr. Anthony Szymczyk (France), Dr. Jiazhao Wang (Australia), Dr. Mario Malinconico (Italy), Prof. Dr. Hidehiro Sakurai (Japan), and Prof. Dr. Zongping Shao (Australia).

The discussion during the conference was very active, and a lot of participants highly evaluated this conference and its organization, regarding it as a high-quality stage to exchange academic ideas on novel materials and synthesis, and strongly demanding its yearly organization.

During the conference, the Organization Committee provided some free wonderful social programs such as a night cruise along Pujiang River, watching acrobatic performance and one-day city tour. The participants learned more about Fudan University, Shanghai, and China. Prof. Yuping Wu and Prof. Shiyou Guan’s labs were in charge of the local organization activities.

The NMS International Organizing Committee has decided to hold the next Conference in Zhengzhou, China, 11-15 October 2014.
