Abstract
Sembène’s film Camp de Thiaroye and Anna Seghers’ novella Les noces d’Haïti differ as to genre, cultural context, and historical time, but highlight cases of racism, double-dealing, and ingratitude towards faithful black populations in the French overseas colonies. On December 1944, many African soldiers of the colonial troops who fought against Nazism were massacred by the French authorities because, following the example of their white army friends, they demanded that their promised demobilization fees be paid. Hundred-forty years earlier, Napoleon Bonaparte had arrested Toussaint Louverture, who had helped the French authorities expel from Santo Domingo the rivals Great Britain and Spain. Moreover, Napoleon decided to restore slavery on this island, although the National Convention had already abolished it on February 1794 as a reward for the struggle of Toussaint Louverture and the slaves against the enemies of France.
