About this book
This book explores how philanthropy is perceived and practiced in a predominantly Muslim society. It is the first academic quantification of philanthropic giving and volunteering using a representative sample of the Egyptian population, providing the reader with a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the state of philanthropy in Egypt. The book discusses traditional and religious philanthropic mechanisms and provides a thorough explanation of the waqf system, how it is perceived today, and how it could support innovation.
Furthermore, as a solid direct product of the research embodied in the creation of a community foundation, it discusses reviving and modernizing the concept of waqf, thus elaborating an example of how academic studies may be employed to create proto-types for learning and calculated action.

"Auch in überwiegend muslimischen Gesellschaften wird Philanthropie praktiziert [vgl. dazu Kogelmann, S&S 5/2006, S. 28-29]. Für die fromme Stiftung ist der Begriff Waqf eingeführt. Errichtet wird er als Gott zugeeignetes, unveräußerliches Gut der toten Hand durch Widmung des Stiftungsguts für einen vom Islam anerkannten Zweck.
Typisch ist die Trägerschaft oder Unterstützung von Moscheen, Koran-Schulen, Krankenhäuser oder Wohlfahrtseinrichtungen, aber auch Bewässerungsinfrastruktur oder der Unterhalt der Armen an den heiligen Stätten. Durch Verstaatlichungen in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde das in Stiftungen verkörperte Engagement der Bürger zurückgedrängt und kam fast zum Erliegen. Marwa El Daly hat nun anhand einer repräsentativen Stichprobe eine erste wissenschaftliche Quantifizierung philanthropischer Spenden und Freiwilligenarbeit in der ägyptischen Bevölkerung vorgelegt. Im Buch diskutiert werden traditionelle und religiöse philanthropische Mechanismen, aber auch die heutige Wahrnehmung und Modernisierung des Waqf-Systems. Die Autorin bietet so in englischer Sprache eine quantitative und qualitative Analyse des aktuellen Zustands der Philanthropie in Ägypten. Und sie geht weiter, wenn sie ihr eigenes, aus ihren Forschungen erwachsenes Modell vorstellt, die Waqfeyat al-Maadi al-Ahleya, eine Gemeinschaftsstiftung, mit der soziale und sozial unternehmerische Verantwortung neu belebt wird."
