Abstract

The three Rhaeto-Romance varieties (Friulian, Dolomitic Ladin, and Romansh) have some features in common, as well as some distinctive characteristics, both at the segmental and suprasegmental levels. As far as vowel systems are concerned, one can point out that such languages have (or had in previous stages) a contrast between long and short stressed vowels. The same can be said for the palatal plosives /c/ and /ɟ/, which characterize the Rhaeto-Romance area. Other common features (shared also with other Romance varieties of Northern Italy) are the absence of a contrast between long and short consonants and the devoicing of final obstruents. As far as intonation is concerned, the three languages share the same nuclear configuration for broad focus statements (H+L* L%). In addition, Ladin and Friulian share the same set of contours in yes-no questions (L* H%, L+H* LH%, and L+H* L%).
