Wörterbuchkritik - Dictionary Criticism
This chapter is in the book Wörterbuchkritik - Dictionary Criticism

Abstract

Dictionary criticism can focus on checking finished dictionary articles, which are embedded into fixed dictionary concepts, on a metalexicographical level. However, if lexicography is understood as a cultural practice in cultural and scientific history, it has to be located in its specific historico-cultural and historicoscientific place. The same is true for the dictionary critics. Based on a number of historic examples, this article describes the dependence of dictionaries and dictionary criticism on the specific cultural, ideological and scientific history; moreover, the article points to the resulting necessity to always lexicographically reflect one’s own position.
