Abstract

The Introduction discusses the reason for, and the ideas behind, the publication and explores what is meant by ‘sense and sensibility’, a concept encompassing the need to integrate knowledge and reasoning (sense) with sensibility (dialogue and co-creation). It introduces the network of researchers who have contributed to the book and the research projects which exemplify different applications of ‘sense and sensibility’.

It situates the book within the history of key discourses within social work with a particular focus on child protection and highlights the development of theoretical and practice innovations that mark a shift away from managerialist approaches towards those involving participatory practices and co-creation.
