Strategien der Wiederverwendung und des Recyclings von Materialien und Objekten aus China verfügen über eine lange Tradition in Kunst, Kunsthandwerk und Design. Das Buch untersucht, wie Künstler*innen, Kunsthandwerker*innen und Designer*innen unerwünschte, benutzte und entsorgte Materialien und Objekte neu bewerten und kreativ weiterverarbeiten. Die Beiträge präsentieren aktuelle Forschung zur materiellen Kultur Chinas – eines der Länder, das in der Produktion und Aufnahme von Abfall weltweit führend ist – im globalen Kontext. Anna Grasskamp, Professorin für Kunstgeschichte und Bildwissenschaft an der Universität Oslo. Zu ihren Veröffentlichungen zählen u.a. Objects in Frames: Displaying Foreign Collectibles in Early Modern China and Europe (2019; zweite Auflage 2022) und Art and Ocean Objects of Early Modern Eurasia: Shells, Bodies, and Materiality (2021). 2024 kuratierte sie die Ausstellung The Art of Upcycling: Contemporary Jewelry from Hong Kong im GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig. Derzeit leitet sie das fünfjähriges Forschungsprojekt An Ecological History of Eurasian Art: Natural Resources, Aesthetic Practices, and Early Modern Globalization, das durch einen Consolidator Grant des Europäischen Forschungsrats (ERC) gefördert wird.
