European Health Social Movements: An Introduction

Abstract
This paper aims to address the existing gap in the literature concerning health-related movements in Europe. As will be demonstrated, these movements and campaigns have been pivotal in the evolution of European healthcare systems, thereby accounting for their divergence from the American experience as documented by scholars of contentious politics. More specifically, health social movements in Europe have played a pivotal role in the formation of new political subjects and collective identities, while simultaneously challenging established diagnostic categories and therapeutic practices. Moreover, they have been instrumental in the expansion of human rights to encompass the right to healthcare and health, thereby reinforcing the notion of health as a fundamental right across the continent.
