Abstract

Microorganisms inhabit most of the ecosystems around us, including soil, rhizosphere, phyllosphere, coral reefs, insect guts, streams, ocean, and even atmospheric aerosols. Even remote ecosystems with extreme geographic and climatic conditions are inhabited by microorganisms. Bacteria, archaea, and fungi are the major microbial groups found. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Thaumarchaeota, Euryarchaeota, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota are some of the major microbial phyla found in most of the ecosystems. Metagenomic approaches enable efficient analysis of microbial compositions and abundances of various microbiomes. In this chapter, we discuss the abundance and composition of microbes present in various terrestrial and aquatic habitats.
