The Origins of the Creed of Jerusalem

  • Wolfram Kinzig

Abstract

The article discusses the origin of the Creed of Jerusalem (J) as attested by Cyril (bishop 348-386/387). It seeks to demonstrate that J displays so many similarities with the Old Roman Creed (R) that R (or a creed closely resembling R) must be considered the ancestor of J. It is suggested that R may have been ‘imported’ to Jerusalem in the context of the synod held on the occasion of the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335.
