Formation des Glaubens

  • Wolfram Kinzig

Abstract

This article traces the history of the liturgical and catechetical Sitz im Leben of the major ancient creeds and asks what consequences these Sitze im Leben have had for the spread of the Christian faith. For practical purposes, the text focuses on Rome, the western Roman Empire and its successor territories in Western Europe, especially the Frankish Empire, up to Charlemagne. It was during this period that infant baptism gradually became established as a regular practice in the newly Christianized territories. With this general development in mind, the particular question is asked: to what extent did the establishment of infant baptism and its ritual performance change catechesis about the Christian faith? The preserved explanations of the creed demonstrate that dogmatic precision or in-depth theological knowledge were not essential for the survival of Christianity in the Latin Church. Instead, two key elements provided the necessary resources needed. First, it seems to have sufficed if the faithful were given a basic credal pattern to describe the relationship between God and humans. Second, Christians had to be equipped with a guide in the form of the Lord’s Prayer, which illustrated the appropriate way to contact the God described in the creed.
