Abstract
Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) was one of the most prolific writers of the late eighteenth century. Desmond (1792), published at the height of the British debate over the French Revolution, marked a turning point in Smith’s career as a novelist. In it, she abandoned the sentimental heroines and gothic tropes of her earlier fictions for a male protagonist, who engaged directly in political debate, defending Thomas Paine’s The Rights of Man and the actions of the French Revolutionaries and critiquing Edmund Burke and the conservative British press. Desmond mixes descriptions of political injustice with accounts of its protagonist’s passion for the married Geraldine Verney. The epistolary form of the novel fosters a complex dialogue between Desmond, Geraldine, and other correspondents on political and domestic tyranny. Because of this, Smith’s novel has been central to the work of feminist critics interested in exploring women’s political alienation. Widely understood as troubling dominant narratives of the novel, which see the rise of the genre as coterminous with the development of modern nations, Desmond also suggests alternative cosmopolitan and transnational trajectories for the form.
