Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to show the problems posed by the notion of crosslinguistic equivalence when different levels of semantic analysis are not established. It is argued that those levels will be decisive in determining the degree of comparability or equivalence that exists between lexical items. Such difficulties will be illustrated with a case study of a concrete equivalence between prefixed verbs of ‘destruction’ in Spanish, German, Latin and Ancient Greek. The analysis proposed is intended to show the specific difficulties encountered in studying such equivalences and the aspects to be taken into account when comparing the lexical items from a semantic point of view.
