Perspectives on individual responsibility in the context of refugee and migrant integration
-
Stephen Wordsworth
Abstract
Cara, the Council for At-Risk Academics, was established in the United Kingdom in 1933 in response to the crisis engulfing German academia following the Nazis’ rise to power. The chapter outlines the history of this organisation and also its work today to help academics around the world to escape from persecution, violence and conflict, by working with university partners to provide safe places where they can continue their work until, as most hope, they can return home. The chapter also explains how Cara supports exiled academics through regionally-based programmes, and how it works with other partner organisations. For 85 years, Cara Fellows have gone on to enrich the scientific, intellectual and cultural life of Britain, and have been recognised for their ground-breaking work with Nobel prizes and other awards.
