The grammars of the Main Series A are designed as “reference grammars”, which mostly only deal with the phonology and morphology, and sometimes with the syntax as well. They provide information principally on confirmed grammatical findings, but also point to gaps and controversies in the research, both with copious references to the literature, thus allowing the reader to penetrate the material more deeply. The “Summaries” in Series C restrict this information to the minimum necessary. The Supplementary Series B presents books dealing with subjects from grammar, language history and ancillary disciplines.

Volume 5/2 in this series

Sub-volume II of Old High German Grammar consults suitable sources in order to present the basic structures of the syntax of the oldest precursor to German, from case, and nominal and verbal word groups to complex sentences. It applies a method that is theory-neutral, working with the categories and terminology of traditional grammar.

In addition to Wilhelm Braune's »Old High German Grammar«, newly revised by Ingo Reiffenstein, Richard Schrodt presents the first detailed description of an Old High German syntax ever undertaken. The syntax was elaborated from the sources.

Volume 5/1 in this series

For 130 years, Wilhelm Braun’s Old High German Grammar has been an indispensable research and teaching tool in Germanic studies. The 16th edition begins by revising and updating volume I: Phonology/Morphology (formerly by Ingo Reiffenstein). It remains faithful to Braune’s aim to combine a textbook and research grammar.

Wilhelm Braune's »Old High German Grammar« has been a companion to research and teaching in German studies for the last 100 years. The last revision was undertaken by Hans Eggers (1975/1987). The new 15th edition incorporates the rich research literature on morphology and phonology published over the last 30 years, and also attempts a careful modernization of this valuable work. The original aim of the book was to achieve a combination of study manual and research grammar. This intention has been preserved in the new edition.

Volume 2 in this series

The 25th edition of Hermann Paul's grammar is the first step toward a study grammar that combines the virtues of greater ease of use, concentration on essentials, and a more reliable description of Middle High German. The revised accounts of phonology and morphology have profited in part from the ongoing work on the extensive Middle High German grammar now in the process of completion. The description of noun declination has been thoroughly revised. The syntax section has been extensively reworked and greatly expanded, with a wealth of references to Middle High German prose texts.

Volume 1 in this series

This is a completely revised version of the 20-year-old "Grammar of Gothic". The new edition upholds its allegiance to the dual function of the original as a study grammar for academic learning and a reference work for ongoing research. Two aims are central: clear and complete presentation of the facts and a comprehensive documentation of the relevant research with specific reference to language history. Formally, the volume has undergone extensive revision. The grammar itself has been brought up to date, in line with the latest research on the subject.

This set encompasses the two volumes of the Old High German Grammar. Volume I (Phonology and Morphology) and volume II (Syntax) were closely coordinated and comprise an indispensable reference work for the study of Old High German in research and teaching.

Volume 5/1 in this series

Parallel to the completely new edition of volume II, Syntax, volume I is being presented in a carefully revised seventeenth edition, many aspects of which have been further developed. It sticks with its proven concept, but continues to incorporate and expand upon more recent gloss research. One important new feature is that the Old Saxon and Middle High German equivalents are presented alongside the Old High German paradigms.
