Schleiermacher’s translations of English sermons were created at the start of his publication activity. His translation of Hugh Blair’s fourth and fifth book of sermons is presented synoptically along with the original English text.
In 1798, Schleiermacher translated two volumes of Joseph Fawcett’s 1795 sermons from the English. The text is presented synoptically. In 1799, together with Henriette Herz, Schleiermacher translated Mungo Park’s report from the same year on the discovery of the Niger River, titled Travels in the Interior of Africa. The text translated by Schleiermacher himself is presented synoptically, with the rest in German version only.
Schleiermacher’s translation was initiated by F. Schlegel as a joint project, but it was worked out by Schleiermacher alone. The critical edition presents the texts of the first and second edition (with general introduction and introductions to the dialogues, notes and the Greek textual basis) as well as the handwritten drafts and preliminary notes, which in part go back to the (unpublished) work already carried out together with Schlegel (1801).
Volume KGA IV/4 (Plato’s Works I 2, 1805, 1818) of the historical-critical edition of Schleiermacher’s German Plato translation contains the dialogues Charmides, Euthyphro, Parmenides, Apology, Crito, Ion, Hippias Minor, Hipparchus, Minos, and Alcibiades II. The edition highlights Schleiermacher's translation process – from his work on the original text and the rough translation through to the printed translation as a "text in its own right."
This volume commences the second part of Schleiermacher’s translations of Plato, which henceforth turns to the theory of ideas in physics and ethics. The dialogues are presented with the texts of the translations of the 1st and 2nd edition including Schleiermacher’s introductions and notes, the Greek original, and, most notably, substantial material from the manuscripts documenting Schleiermacher’s preliminary work on the dialogues.
