Staub, HGB, is one of the oldest German language commentaries on commercial law; the first edition was published in 1893. It offers one of the most extensive and complete presentations of commercial law, including numerous related fields of law. In addition to the Commercial Code (excluding Maritime Law), the most recent edition includes an extensive portrayal of accounting tax law as well as bank contract law, the CMR (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road), transportation law, including the German Freight Forwarders' Standard Terms and Conditions (ADSp.) and additional general terms and conditions of transportation law. Its reputation is based, above all, on its scientifically grounded yet hands-on commentary that is guaranteed by the accomplished and well-known editors and authors from the fields of legal practice and scientific research that contribute to the commentary.

The first portion of the partial volume on Bank Contract Law elucidates the legal framework for the banking business. It discusses the fundamentals of regulatory law, examines institutions and institutional groups, and addresses the fundamentals of business administration for banks. The second portion focuses on the overall bank-customer relationship. It presents general obligations, discusses the bank account as the central element of the bank-customer relationship, and examines the general terms and conditions applicable to banks and savings banks.

The just published second partial volume on Banking Contract Law (HGB) covers the two principal aspects of commercial banking – namely, payment transactions and lending. The commentaries place special emphasis on thinking that is based on underlying European and –to some extent – international normative standards while also taking into account transnational business activity. The two parts are written in interrelated fashion and presented in parallel, thus easing comparison. Stefan Grundmann has final responsibility for the section on payment transactions and Moritz Renner for the section on lending.

Volume 11 explains investment banking in a broad sense, including its European and international dimensions. In addition to overviews of various areas – including, for example, emissions trading – it focuses primarily on commentaries on the following individual laws: WpHG [German Securities Trading Act] (now including the MM-VO and EMIR [Market Abuse Directive and European Market Infrastructure Regulation]), BörsG [Stock Exchange Act] WpProspG [Securities Prospectus Act], WpÜG [Security and Takeover Act], DepotG [Security Deposit Act]. The commentary and some presentations of individual laws are structured according to the parts that primarily affect bank organization, relationships with individual customers, or markets in general.
