German is, of course, an inflectional language. Some parts of speech are normally inflected: verbs, adjectives, nouns, pronouns and articles, to name the most predominate ones. This introduction asks whether it makes sense to even mention uninflected forms of inflectional word classes. It is a well-known fact that adjectives are only inflected in one special position – as an attribute preceding a noun. In other syntactic functions adjectives are used in their simple form. Verbal infinitives can be described as partly uninflected as they are not inflected for person and number. Finite and infinite forms have totally different syntactic functions: finite verbs are predicates and infinite verbs are everything else. Now we must ask ourselves if we can also find uninflected, i.e. undeclined nouns? We can also find undeclined forms among pronouns and articles. On the other hand, perhaps there are inflected prepositions and conjunctions. This introduction produces more questions than answers, but it presents the framework for the articles found in this volume.

The current article aims at an adequate description and a plausible explanation of the inflecting and non-inflecting behavior of substantives in modern German. The concept of the (in)finite substantive forms the theoretical framework of the study. Typological and language-historical arguments are brought forward which support the theory that the form of the respective gender realization motivates the form of the respective case realization. Since the realization of gender is periphrastic in the singular and synthetic in the plural, the realization of case is respectively also periphrastic and synthetic. The argumentation calls for, among other things, a new approach to gender. It is assumed that the categorization of gender is not limited to the singular, but rather also extends to the plural. The system of plural marking – with the exception of the s -plural – constitutes a synthetic gender marking system. Thus, the gender system of modern German consists of systematic relations between periphrastic “target genders” in the singular and synthetic “controller genders” in the plural.

After a short look on traditional paradigms of the German noun and after a look on paradigms with so-called underspecified forms, this paper first addresses the question of how paradigms of German nouns would look like if periphrastic noun forms (consisting of a determiner and a noun) were taken into consideration. Since nonperiphrastic noun forms co-exist with such hypothesized periphrastic noun forms, the traditional German noun paradigm with 8 positions would have to be enlarged to paradigms with up to 14 different forms, which is considered to be a severe argument against the hypothesis of periphrastic nouns. Next, starting out from the forms of the verb, the notions finite and non-finite are discussed and it is shown that with the verb there are clear formal differences between finite and non-finite forms which correspond to as clear functional differences between these two different sets of forms. As for the adjective, it is shown that, though similar differences are less straightforward than in the verb, a distinction between finite and non-finite forms still could be made. Finally, two different concepts of non-finite nouns are discussed and it is argued that neither concept leads to a convincing notion of non-finite noun. In conclusion, the idea of non-finite nouns is rejected.

German noun phrases containing an article realise gender and case inflection on that article. There seems to be only a few exceptions to this rule, e.g., the indefinite article ( ein ) and the related negation ( kein ) and possessive articles ( mein, dein , etc.) remain uninflected in nom.sg.msc. and nom./acc.sg.ntr. This is marked behaviour with respect to the dominating type of nominal inflection. It will be argued that there exists a markedness conflict between different structural parameters. The behaviour of the indefinite article is motivated, and thus unmarked, with respect to the structural parameters case hierarchy, gender hierarchy, and paradigmatic preferences for the form of articles. The development of noun or noun phrase inflection in language history reveals that both the emergence of the indefinite article and noun group inflection are part of a general reorganization of the formal means of nominal determination. As one result, central functions of nominal determination are formally separated from inflection. Being functional heads, the separate determiners attract other grammatical markings as well. However, the combined formal realisation of grammatical features does not involve a dependence of determination from inflection, thus the non-inflection of determiners in nom.sg.msc. and nom./acc.sg.ntr. is not marked with respect to nominal determination.

Non-inflecting adjectives occur not only in predicative, adverbial, co-predicative-adverbial and adadjectival-attributive function, but also occur regularly in adnominal-attributive function in particular types of text. This can occur in both the preposed and postposed position of the governing nominal core of the noun phrase. In contrast, the adnominal-attributive use in the position between the determinative and the governing nominal core is characteristic of inflected adjectives.

This paper deals with three different abnormal constructions of the noun phrase in German: nouns hold full case inflection when they are un-accompanied in the NP ( von ein-em Löw-en getötet > von Löw-em getötet ‘killed by a-DATIVE pron.infl. lion’ > ‘killed by lion-DATIVE pron.infl. ’); structural gaps of unexpressed ‘indefiniteness’ are closed ( der Clown hat welche Schuhe an ‘the clown wears „some“ shoes’ analogous to der Clown hat einen Schuh an ‘the clown wears a shoe’); strong adjectives following definite articles express NP-internal ‘predication’ ( dies-er freundlich-er Streit “this strong friendly strong quarrel” ‘this quarrel which was such a friendly one’). What seems to be deviating is quite current in language history, in dialects, and in language acquisition and offers latent possibilities of constructing German NP.

Die Historische Soziolinguistik hat sich in den letzten 25 Jahren zu einer zentralen Teildisziplin der sprachhistorischen Forschung entwickelt, von der auch wichtige Impulse für die Linguistik der Gegenwartssprache ausgehen. Dennoch sind bislang nur wenige Versuche unternommen worden, den zahlreichen Forschungsansätzen ein gemeinsames Forum zu geben, das einen intensiven Austausch über Theorien und Methoden der Disziplin, aber auch über forschungspraktische Fragen ermöglichen würde. Im vergangenen Jahr wurde auf der Konferenz „Language History from Below“ in Bristol das „Historical Sociolinguistics Network“ (HiSoN) gegründet. HiSoN besteht zur Zeit aus über 100 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus unterschiedlichen Philologien.

The article addresses the empirical problem of part-of-speech classification. In order to illustrate this problem, the study presents an analysis of 100 instances of the use of so , in which it becomes clear that the part-of-speech hypotheses derived from reference works only cover a portion of the occurrences of so . The focus on the empirical problem of part-of-speech classification originates from the belief that, on the one hand, the linguistic reality which is to be empirically analyzed should serve as the criterion for reasonable part-of-speech classification, and that on the other hand, empirical analyses also pose theoretical problems which would remain undetected in a purely theoretical approach. The article therefore closes with a plea for a narrow connection between theory and empiricism in order to be able to attain a reasonable part-of-speech classification.

So ein dickes Biest von Buch! 637 Seiten, ohne das Literaturverzeichnis und das Sachregister, die noch hinzukommen. Wer wird das von vorn bis hinten lesen? Wohl nur ExpertInnen für das nonverbale Kommunikationsverhalten – denn das ist das Thema dieses Buches – in Ost- und in Westeuropa ab dem 16. Jahrhundert bis ungefähr 1900, d.h. KulturwissenschaftlerInnen, die auf diese Kulturräume und auf diesen Zeitraum spezialisiert sind. Zwar kann ich versichern, aufgrund eigener Leseerfahrung, dass sich die vollständige Lektüre dieses Buches auch für andere Kommunikations- und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen lohnen würde, hege aber wenig Hoffnung, damit zusätzliche LeserInnen für das ganze Buch werben zu können. Alle KollegInnen, die ich kenne, haben für die eigene Horizonterweiterung und Weiterbildung außerhalb der eigenen Forschungsgebiete kaum noch Energie- und Zeitreserven und müssen schon froh sein, wenn sie es nur schaffen, jedenfalls in ihrem allerengsten Wissenschaftsbereich mit der Buch- und Artikelproduktion durch die Lektüre alles Einschlägigen mitzuhalten. Ich empfehle deshalb das Buch von Zakharine meiner germanistisch-linguistischen Fachmitgenossenschaft nur erstens zur Anschaffung (der Preis von rund 60 Euro ist gerade noch erträglich), zweitens zum Nachschlagen, drittens aber auch zum darin Stöbern oder Schmökern. Für die potenziellen LeserInnen, die darin nur entweder nachschlagen oder kursiv stöbernd lesen wollen werden, schreibe ich hier.

Seit 13 Jahren treffen sich die VertreterInnen der germanistischen und zunehmend auch der internationalen Jugendsprachforschung in regelmäßigen Abständen zu einem Austausch über den gegenwärtigen Stand der Forschung. Nach den Fachkonferenzen in Leipzig (1992), Heidelberg (1997), Osnabrück (1998) und Wuppertal (2001) fand im Februar 2005 die fünfte Tagung in Boldern bei Zürich und damit erstmals außerhalb Deutschlands statt. Etwa 90 TeilnehmerInnen aus 15 Ländern waren der Einladung von Christa Dürscheid (Zürich) gefolgt, „neue Blicke durch alte Löcher“ und „neue Blicke durch neue Löcher“ zu werfen, wie es in ihrem Eröffnungsvortrag in Anlehnung an Georg Christoph Lichtenberg hieß. Neben aktuellen Ergebnissen standen also auch alte, ungelöste Grundsatzfragen der Forschung (Welchen ontologischen Status räumt man „Jugendsprache“ ein? Ist sie eine Varietät, ein Stil, ein Register? Ist „Jugend“ eher eine soziale oder eher eine biologische Kategorie? u. a.) auf dem Programm.

Wie schon in den beiden Vorjahren fand die Arbeitstagung zur Gesprächsforschung (ehemals Freiburger Arbeitstagung ) in diesem Jahr wieder in Mannheim statt und wurde vom Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) und vom Institut für Gesprächsforschung (IGF) ausgerichtet. Das Rahmenthema der diesjährigen Tagung lautete „Grammatik und Interaktion“. Zu diesem Thema konnten die Organisatoren Arnulf Deppermann (Frankfurt am Main), Reinhard Fiehler (IDS, Mannheim) und Thomas Spranz-Fogasy (IDS, Mannheim) auch in diesem Jahr wieder viele namenhafte Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen aus dem In- und Ausland für Vorträge, Projektpräsentationen und Datensitzungen gewinnen.

Im Anschluss an die zwei Jahre zuvor an der University of Bristol abgehaltene Konferenz zum Thema „Sprachpurismus“ (vgl. ZGL 31, 2003, 310-316) gingen auf Einladung von Nils Langer (Bristol), Stephan Elspaß (Augsburg), Joachim Scharloth (Zürich) und Wim Vandenbussche (Brüssel) über 60 an einer Historischen Soziolinguistik interessierte Linguistinnen und Linguisten der Frage nach, welche Bedeutung dem Konzept einer „Sprachgeschichte von unten“ innerhalb der Sprachwissenschaft zukommt bzw. zukommen könnte. Die Zusammenfassung der Beiträge erfolgt hier in den folgenden, vielfältig miteinander verwobenen Themenkreisen: (I.) Das Konzept „Sprachgeschichte von unten“, (II.) Alltagssprachliche Texte in der Sprachgeschichte, (III.) Stigmatisierungen grammatischer Konstruktionen, (IV.) Sprachkonflikt und Sprachwahl, (V.) Jüngere Sprachentwicklungen, (VI.) Variation und Sprachwandel.

Der zehnte Kongress der IADA – International Association for Dialogue Analysis (www.unimuenster.de/Ling/iada) – wurde vom 25. bis 28. Mai an der Facultatea de Litere der Universität Bukarest abgehalten. Die Organisation lag in den Händen von Frau Prof. Liliana Ruxăndoiu. Der Rektor der Universität sowie der Präsident der Rumänischen Akademie der Wissenschaften unterstützten die Veranstaltung.

Erwartungsgemäß gehörten ComputerlinguistInnen zu den ersten und aktivsten Wissenschaftlern, die im Web präsent waren. Bis heute verfügen sie über besonders umfangreiche Angebote. Das gilt auch dann, wenn man – wie hier – Computerlinguistik im engeren Sinne versteht als eine gleichermaßen theoretisch wie anwendungstechnisch orientierte Disziplin, die sprachliche Gesetzmäßigkeiten möglichst explizit formulieren will, um auf dieser Grundlage Rechnersysteme zu bauen, die natürliche (menschliche) Sprache analysieren, bearbeiten, ,verstehen‘ und erzeugen können. (Davon zu unterscheiden sind allgemeine computergestützte Werkzeuge für Sprachwissenschaftler wie elektronische Wörterbücher, Online-Korpora und linguistische Lernsoftware; sie wurden in anderen Ausgaben dieser ZGL-Rubrik „Linguistik im Internet“ vorgestellt.) Wegen der großen Menge computer-linguistischer Materialien im WWW konzentriert sich dieser Bericht aufzwei Arten von Wegweisern. Einerseits werden einige ausgewählte einzelne Adressen vorgestellt, die vor allem Germanisten einen gewissen Querschnitt durch die Vielfalt des Angebots geben mögen. Andererseits werden besonders ergiebige Linklisten genannt, über die man die zahlreichen und vielfältigen Angebote zur CL im Netz bestens erschließen kann.

Beginnend mit dem ZGL-Heft 1.2004 wählen die Herausgeberin und die Herausgeber der ZGL nach dem Kriterium der Einschlägigkeit für das Fach der germanistischen Linguistik aus der nachfolgend abgedruckten bibliographischen Basis, die aus Zeitschriften und Jahrbüchern besteht, Beiträge aus und stellen sie – sachlich geordnet – zueiner Zeitschriftenschau zusammen. Die zugrunde gelegte sachliche Ordnung istunten abgedruckt. Ausgewertet werden die zuletzt erschienen Jahrbücher und beiden Zeitschriften alle Hefte des vorausgehenden Jahrgangs, soweit sie erschienen sind.
