Einleitung Bei der in meinem Aufsatze “Was ist Wahrheit (1)?” in ZCP 49/50, 1997, S. 308ff., vorgelegten Gegenüberstellung irischer und altindischer Vorstellungen hatte sich ergeben, daß einerseits hinsichtlich der Einordnung des Menschen in das kosmische Geschehen und der daraus entstehenden Wahrheitsideologie im Grundsätzlichen ein großes Maß an Übereinstimmung bestand, daß aber andererseits auch beträchtliche Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Art und Weise, wie man seine Rollenfunktion, d. h. seine Persönlichkeit der Wahrheit gegenüber definierte, zu erkennen waren. Es wurde vermutet, daß solche Abweichungen nicht nur in der Verschiedenheit religionsgeschichtlicher Denkansätze begründet sind, sondern daß sie darüberhinaus eng mit einer entsprechenden strukturellen Verschiedenheit der irischen und altindischen Sprache zusammenhängen. Es liegt nahe, dem Gang vorliegender Forschungen folgend, mit Frankreich zu beginnen, Irland und Gallien in den Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen zu stellen, diese dann mit Griechenland, Iran und Indien zu konfrontieren und schließlich über England nach Frankreich zurückzukehren, um kulturelle Zusammenhänge hervortreten zu lassen und möglicherweise Ansatzpunkte für weitere Forschungen über Frankreich zu erschließen.

The focus of this enquiry is the concept of sacral kingship, as it is presented in the early Insular mythic literature, from the perspective of its possible genesis in cult perceptions belonging to the pre-Christian Roman period, in western Europe, as expressed in religious imagery. Within the iconographic repertoire of Gaul and Britain, there is significant – albeit circumstantial – ‘ancestral’ evidence for the theme of sacral kingship, and I hope to show close linkages between the presentation of certain Gallo-British imagery and specific aspects of the Irish tradition. In the main part of this paper, I will explore the iconographic themes that appear to express such linkages. I should emphasise that, for the Roman period, we have no primary documents explaining the nature of cult-expression; so the images themselves have to be treated as texts, with all the ambiguities which such treatment inevitably involves. In the final part of the paper, I will offer models of explanation for the presence of genuine connections between Gallo-British iconography and the later mythic tradition of Ireland and possible mechanisms by which such connections might have operated.

I am a classicist, but in my studies of Greek etymology I sometimes come across Celtic material. I am glad to have this opportunity to discuss the interpretation of some Celtic features used in IE etymologies with Celtologists.

The Celtic words denoting ‘beard, bristles’ – Old Irish grend , Welsh grann (the latter also ‘cheek’), cf. Breton gourenn ‘sourcil’, are usually derived from IE * ghrºdhā (to IE * gher- ‘hervorstechen’ [De Bernardo Stempel 1987: 119; cf. IEW : 440]. This formation, as far as I know, has not found yet an exact match in the other Indo-European languages. The Albanian forms that are quoted in this entry by J. Pokorny – krande ‘Strohhalm, Splitter, Reisig’, tosk. krende ‘Zweig’ [ IEW : 440], cf. [Demiraj 1997 s.v. krënde/krãnde ] – according to V. Orel, contain the reflexes of the prefix * ka- , while the stem reflects a different IE root, viz. * rendh- ‘(zer)reißen’ [ IEW : 865], see [Orel 1988: 111] and cf. [Orel 1998: 196]. In this respect I would like to draw attention to the Common Slavic * grǫdъ . Though the continuations of this Common Slavic etymon are not attested in Old Church Slavonic, they can be found in abundance in the later languages, cf., e. g., Old Russian Грɤди (Modern Russian grud' ), Modern Bulgarian ƧрЪ∂ or Old Polish grędzi . The basic meaning of these words is ‘chest, breast, bosom’, see [Trubachëv 1980: 148–9]. Another Common Slavic etymon, * grǫda , which is morphologically closer to the Celtic protoform, is a source for words with the meaning ‘heap, pile’, e. g., Old Russian Грɤда or Polish gruda . However, the meaning ‘breast, bosom’ is still attested for its continuations as well [Trubachëv 1980: 146–7].

Balor (with variants Balar and archaic Bolar ), the monstrous one-eyed king of Fomorians , was much-feared for his evil piercing eye ( biruderc suil milldach , cf. Cath Maige Tuired §§133–135). The existing etymologies of his name are certainly not definitive: 1) O'Rahilly (1957: 59) projected the name in Celtic * boleros , deriving it from * b h el- “to flash”. 2) Kalygin (1997: 367–69) proposed the starting point * g w lro- , a derivative from * g w el- “to kill”. In principle, both the etymologies are possible, but rather vague from the point of view of semantics.

Today, there is broad agreement that the verbal form TośoKoTe (RIG *E-2: Vercelli) ≡ DEDIT in the bilingual inscription of Vercelli contains an infixed clitic pronominal śo= ; so Koch 1983: 187–188, Eska 1990a: 4–5, [De Bernardo Stempel 1997, Zeitschrift 49–50: 99–100,] Uhlich, forthcoming; otherwise Meid 1989: 14–16 & 36–37. It appears that śo= is a 3. singular accusative proleptic pronominal which anticipates of the accusative singular argument αTo; .

Nicht von ungefähr hat Rudolf Thurneysen sein Handbuch des Alt-Irischen. 1. Teil. Grammatik (Heidelberg 1909) “dem Andenken John Strachan's gewidmet”. Wie der ‘Vorrede’ zu entnehmen ist, war der durch den unerwartet frühen Tod von Strachan nicht zur Ausführung gekommene Forschungsplan der beiden Gelehrten gewissermaßen komplementär angelegt: 1) “Er [Strachan] wollte, sich rein auf das Gebiet des Irischen beschränkend, in einem umfangreicheren Werke das Altirische und das Mittelirische zusammen behandeln. Ich [Thurneysen] plante von Anfang an, mich bei der knapperen Fassung streng ans Altirische zu halten und nur in der Richtung darüber hinauszugehen, daß ich solchen, die vom Studium anderer indogermanischer Sprachen her an das Irische heranträten, die verbindenden Fäden bloßlegte” (Thurneysen: Handbuch VII).

1.1 Definition des Problems Die Entwicklung vom Gemeinkeltischen zu den inselkeltischen Sprachen verlief, wie allgemein bekannt, keinesfalls geradlinig. Bestehen in den keltischen Sprachen von altersher dialektale Unterschiede (Irisch einerseits, Kymrisch als westbritannischer Dialekt, Kornisch und Bretonisch als südwestbritannische Dialekte andererseits), so zeigen sich im Formenbau anfangs noch Gemeinsamkeiten, die im Laufe der Zeit abgebaut bzw. durch Neuentwicklungen verdrängt werden. Alle vier Sprachen bilden z. B. aus dem indogermanischen s -Aorist und Resten des Perfekts in komplementärer Distribution ein neues Präteritum. Im Kymrischen ist nun vom 11. Jh. an eine Sonderentwicklung des Präteritums festzustellen: In der 3. Person Singular wird anstelle der angestammten s -Endung eine neue Endung -awd angehängt, die anderen Personen behalten die s -haltige Endung. Dieser Unterschied ist so markant, daß D. Simon Evans das Mittelkymrische anhand dieses Wandels in zwei Perioden teilt, “early Middle Welsh” und “late Middle Welsh”; diese Einteilung wird neben orthographischen und grammatischen Unterschieden (z. B. dem Gebrauch der Pluralendung -awr (früh) im Kontrast zu -eu, -oeđ (spät) bei den Nomina) an eben diesem Paradigmenwechsel festgemacht.

Hell may well be other people, as Sartre demonstrated in his play Huis Clos , but in many other works of literature portraying hell, it is most usually a place where an author may send other people, especially those he does not like. This is what Ellis Wynne did in his Gweledigaethau y Bardd Cwsg (The Visions of the Sleeping Bard), first published in 1703. In doing so he was following the example of what was a genre of works about hell and Hades published in Spanish, English and French in the seventeenth century.

Celtic tribes once occupied a vast area which stretched from Ireland to Spain and northern Italy, down the Danube river to the Balkans. Even in Asia a small province named Galatia was held by the Galati, who were of Celtic origin and survived till late antiquity. Throughout these territories we find many archaeological traces of ancient Celtic religion. Highly important for the reconstruction of the Celtic pantheon are the widespread epigraphic testimonies on various votive objects from Celtic sanctuaries and shrines (e. g.: altars, columns, bronze tablets etc.) as well as the anepigraphic reliefs representing indigenous deities. With the ever increasing number of such significant finds this invaluable epigraphic source material has never been documented, analysed or interpreted in its entirety. Scholarly documentation, systematic analysis are nevertheless an essential premise to study ancient Celtic religion. It will not only allow us to recognise the linguistic origins, the meaning and the spread of Celtic deities, but will also improve our understanding of the phenomenon of interpretatio Romana/Celtica and the process of Romanisation of Celtic societies as a whole.
