The possessive and accusative pronominal suffixes of the 3ms in Sargonic Akkadian (∼2350–2100 BCE) exhibit a peculiar orthographic feature that is otherwise unknown in Akkadian. The possessive pronominal suffix is regularly written with the sign su while the acc. suffix is written with su 4 . The latter sign is also used for the nom. and acc. 3ms anaphoric pronoun. No satisfactory explanation for this orthographic distinction has been given so far. The present article suggests that the spelling of the acc. pronominal suffix with the same sign as the anaphoric pronoun was caused by a reanalysis of the acc. suffix as being a reflex of the anaphoric pronoun after a set of sound changes had taken place that rendered these two morphemes nearly identical. In other words, in the mind of the speaker it was the anaphoric pronoun that was attached to verbs in the function of the direct object and not the original acc. suffix that had the same shape as the possessive pronominal suffix.

The present study addresses the text BM 29638 – a small tablet (4.3 × 8.9 cm), single-column, 28 lines long, written in an OB script. The tablet is complete, but contrary to its well-preserved obverse, some lines on the reverse are partially worn and effaced. In the British Museum records it is filed as a literary text, but as its content clearly proves, it belongs to the rare group of short OB rituals.

Ein Bronzedolch, der derzeit in der Schausammlung des Archäologischen Museums von Tabriz (Iran) ausgestellt ist, gehört zu einer prominenten Gruppe innerhalb der sogenannten „Luristanbronzen“, nämlich der der beschrifteten Randgriffdolche. Diese Waffen sind mit Inschriften verschiedener Herrscher von Babylon der letzten beiden Jahrhunderte des II. Jahrtausend v.Chr. versehen, gelegentlich auch mit Inschriften von nicht-königlichen Personen, darunter ein Schreiber und ein ša rēš šarri .

Previous studies of the Emar texts dealing with the Hittite administration in Emar have clarified that although there was a strong Hittite presence in Emar, the Hittites ruled it as a vassal kingdom, using the principle of indirect control. While admitting this point, this paper discusses an aspect of the rule which has been almost ignored, i. e., the aspect of direct control. In this regard, it is significant to note that there were Emariote citizens who performed the Hittite obligations (e.g., giš.tukul -duty) for the Hittite king (of Carchemish) in exchange for landed property. This indicates that the Hittites employed some of the Emariotes as local staff; in other words, they partly adopted the policy of direct control in the administration of Emar. The incident of the ‘oppression’ of Zū-Ba'la, an Emariote diviner of high rank, in which a certain Hittite official named Alziyamuwa tried to take away his landed property and to impose the šaḫḫan - and luzzi -duties on him (SMEA 45-T 1; BLMJE 32), should be understood in this context.

In conjunction with my work at the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz, I have been able to find a number of joins and duplicates among the fragments of the Boğazköy archive, and rather than simply allowing them to rest in the card catalogue until being published in a KBo volume or perhaps to go unnoticed within S. Košak's Konkordanz (www.hethiter.net), it seemed fitting to publish them here. This continues in a sense a tradition begun in the pages of the Zeitschrift für Assyriologie by H. Otten and his long-time assistant Ch. Rüster, who published a series of articles entitled ‘Textanschlüsse und Duplikate von Boğazköy-Tafeln’ between 1972 and 1982. Darstellungen des Gottes Dagan lassen sich, entgegen bisheriger Annahme, im Kerngebiet seiner Verehrung während des III. und II. Jts. durch eine kombinierte Betrachtung archäologischer und philologischer Quellen erschließen.
