Vorspann Hat die Geschichte noch ein Publikum? In Film und Fernsehen zweifellos. Verglichen damit erreichen die Produkte der professionellen Geschichtswissenschaft nur noch eine kleine Minderheit. Angesichts dieses Widerspruchs erstaunt die Indolenz, mit der die Vertreter der Zunft auf die Imaginierung ihrer Themen reagieren. Die Tatsache, dass die Historie nicht nur den Historikern gehört, wird von diesen meist ignoriert oder unterschätzt, aber nicht wirklich als Herausforderung begriffen. In diesem Fall ist das anders. Denn Ralf Stremmel geht es um viel mehr als nur um die Kritik einer speziellen historiografischen Dokumentation. Seine eigentliche Frage ist viel weiter gespannt: Was kann man von einer guten historischen Fernsehdokumentation erwarten? Abstract The presentation of contemporary history on television reaches a mass audience. There is ample evidence that it shapes the historical views of the general public more than any other medium. The article attempts to identify quality criteria that can be utilised to rate historical documentaries shown on television. These criteria have to take into account both the way the medium functions as well as the target audience. Yet the manner of handling information must be appropriate to the topic and take an analytical-critical approach. The established criteria are then used to evaluate the documentary Shattering Silence produced by Norddeutscher Rundfunk in 2007. It received multiple awards and is also considered a prime example for a successful historical television program even in professional historical publications. The empirical analysis of the documentation shows, however, that the film is highly manipulative, fails to mention essential information, does not back up most of its allegations and does not sufficiently contextualise the sources used. Viewed in this light, the program asks the right questions, but mostly provides the wrong answers.

Vorspann Ist Ernst Moritz Arndt ein Vorbild? Ein Rätsel ist er allemal. Seine Person und sein OEuvre sind umstritten – die Debatten der vergangenen Jahre haben dies regelmäßig gezeigt –, obwohl doch sein Werk weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten ist. Und ganz unterschiedliche Lager haben ihn wie selbstverständlich für sich in Anspruch genommen – auch die alte Bundesrepublik und die DDR, obwohl Arndt doch vor 1945 eindeutig als Projektionsfläche nationalistischer Sehnsüchte diente. Möglicherweise steht der Name Arndt ja eher für einen Mythos als für einen Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut. Umso schärfer stellt sich daher in seinem Fall die Frage nach seiner Wirkungsgeschichte. Abstract Since 1910, the 50th anniversary of his death, there was a particularly intensive public debate about Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860) in Germany until it somewhat subsided during the Second World War. While his opus contained multifaceted, even liberal ideas, Arndt′s reception as the probably most influential poet and political writer of the anti-Napoleonic Wars was mostly dominated by radical nationalist and Völkisch ideas during the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. Under this nationalist banner, a simplistic understanding of Arndt developed on the research level as well as in the general public long before the National Socialists gained power; after 1933, this image was easily integrated into Nazi ideology and propaganda. The article illuminates Arndt′s reception during the first third of the 20th century using the especially numerous publications accompanying his anniversary years and presents the inner development of the determining patterns of interpretation.

Zusammenfassung Die „Achse“ ist noch immer ein Rätsel. Wir wissen wenig darüber, was sie einte, und genauso wenig, was sie trennte. Monica Fioravanzo, eine in Padua lehrende Historikerin, nähert sich diesem Themenkomplex und untersucht die Pläne für ein Neues Europa, die nach 1939 dies- und jenseits der Alpen geschmiedet wurden. Dabei zeigt sich: Das faschistische Italien gab sich ähnlich hybriden Eroberungs- und Raumfantasien hin wie das Deutsche Reich, Mussolinis Regime beanspruchte sogar die geistige Führung eines monströsen eurasisch-afrikanischen Superkontinents – besann sich 1942/43 aber doch eines Besseren: „Europa der Nationen“ hieß nun die Losung, deren anti-deutsche Stoßrichtung nicht verborgen blieb. Abstract The article explores the plans for a New Europe developed by the Italian Fascist Regime after 1939 as well as its later modifications according to the situation at the front. At the eve of the Second World War, Giuseppe Bottai, at the time minister for education, called upon the cultural elite to think about the cultural foundations of the New Europe. This future entity was supposed to exhibit a clear hierarchy between smaller and larger states and be part of a gigantic Euro-Asiatic-African area dominated by the imperialist powers Italy, Japan and the German Reich. This project was much discussed in Italy, which resulted in German suspicions. Conflict between the Axis partners erupted in 1942, when Italy - despite devastating defeats - attempted to claim intellectual leadership of future Europe - clearly distancing itself from the Nazi Regime which only relied on violence and the Race Myth, while the Fascists founded their superiority on Christianity and the tradition of Ancient Rome. In Spring 1943, the Fascist leadership dissociated itself from such hybrid plans. They now launched the idea of a Europe of the Nations, even though it was clear that this would strongly strain cooperation with the German Reich. The collapse of the Fascist Regime in 1943 ended these intellectual games: The New Europe would only come about under National Socialist auspices - or not at all.

Vorspann Genau wusste es keiner, aber viele hatten eine Meinung dazu. Vor allem zahlreiche interessierte Journalisten redeten sich und anderen nach 1945 ein, dass es im Dritten Reich durchaus möglich gewesen sei, auf subtile Weise seine Meinung zu äußern – und dass sie das in ihren Zeitungen auch getan hätten. Der Historiker Konrad Dussel, seit langem auf diesem Feld profiliert, geht den Dingen auf den Grund: Er untersucht die Presseanweisungen des Regimes und deren Umsetzung in der journalistischen Alltagspraxis in einer ambitionierten Fallstudie. Das Ergebnis ist bestürzend: Die Anweisungen wurden eins zu eins umgesetzt, dissidente Stimmen gab es nicht. Abstract How did pre-WWII newspapers in Germany (roughly 3,000 in 1933 and 2,000 in 1939) implement the approximately 15,000 press directives issued by the National Socialists? This question can only be answered based on a sample survey. The essay presents a model for the creation of such a survey as well as the results of a pilot study analyzing two Mannheim newspapers - the National Socialist Hakenkreuzbanner and the mainstream Neue Mannheimer Zeitung. The control of the editorial content in these two papers was almost 100 percent successful. Slight aberrations were noticeable only in marginal areas. Moreover, the differences between the newspapers were minimal; both conformed to the system.

Vorspann Abgehört – die Protokolle der Lauschangriffe auf gefangene Wehrmachtsgeneräle im britischen Lager Trent Park haben jüngst für Aufsehen gesorgt. Doch nicht nur Offiziere wurden vernommen und belauscht. Die US-Army schleuste Tausende „einfache“ Soldaten durch ihr Vernehmungslager Fort Hunt, unter ihnen den Schriftsteller Alfred Andersch und einige seiner Weggefährten. Die amerikanischen Dossiers geben neue Einblicke in ihre Biographien und Mentalitäten. Abstract For a few years research on the Wehrmacht in the Nazi state has received new impulses from a long forgotten source category: transcripts of tapped conversations made in Western Allied Interrogation Camps during the Second World War. Now another collection of files has been unlocked: over 100,000 pages of files from the secret US camp at Fort Hunt near Washington. This hitherto unknown collection contains protocols of tapped conversations, interrogation reports and biographical data on more than 3000 German prisoners of war made between 1942 and 1945. The high historiographical value of this collection is confirmed by the prisoner dossier on the writer Alfred Andersch contained therein. The eavesdropped conversations and interrogations exhibit new details of his biography: Andersch preoccupation with the fate of his previous half-Jewish wife, his views about German war society as well as details pertaining to his literary work. Additionally the file series contains dossiers about a number of his companions who, like him, had served in the Wehrmacht. The prisoner files reveal the main features of the contemporary thinking of these educated, Bourgeois Anti-Nazis and place Andersch into the context of a segment of the Wehrmacht that was critical of the Regime, but hardly non-conformist. The files reveal that many of these opponents of Hitler were decisively against Nazi rule, but simultaneously preserved a certain degree of identification with the nation and its military value system. Due to such convictions, even Anti-Nazis were able to integrate into the armed forces of the Nazi state - a decisive factor due to which heterogeneity and conformism did not have to contradict each other in the Wehrmacht.
