Mannosylerythritol lipids are glycolipid biosurfactants with promising industrial applications. However, their commercial production is hindered due to its high production cost. The current study investigates the use of sweetwater, a by-product of the fat-splitting industry in combination with soybean oil for the production of mannosylerythritol lipids using Pseudozyma antarctica (MTCC 2706). The optimum sweetwater and soybean oil concentration of 22% and 7% (w/v) yielded 7.52 g L –1 and 21.5 g L –1 mannosylerythritol lipids at shake flask and fermenter level respectively. The structure and functional groups of mannosylerythritol lipids were confirmed by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and 1 H- and 13 C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Surfactant properties, such as surface tension, critical micelle concentration, foaming and emulsification of mannosylerythritol lipids were also explored.

In this study, the synergistic effect of silica nanoparticle and biosurfactants on oil storage tank clean up was investigated. Rhamnolipid, saponin and silica nanoparticles were used to recover oil from refinery oily sludge in laboratory experiments. From our results, the optimum HLB value for the extraction process was about 10.5 for the mixture of 62.5% of rhamnolipid and 37.5% of saponin. Our results also showed that the simultaneous use of the biosurfactants and nanoparticles results in a synergistic effect that significantly enhances the process efficiency. Maximum yield of oil residual was obtained about 4% at the optimum condition (HLB value of 10.5 for mixture of the biosurfactants and 3 g/l of silica nanoparticles). The results of present study showed that this method has the potential for industrial applications and may be used in oil recovery from oily sludge.

In the present work, the phase behaviour of the microemulsion system formulated by using water, organic solvent, and a sugar-based non-ionic surfactant was investigated in detail. We have used a sugar-based non-ionic surfactant for formulation of microemulsion, as it is a greener alternative for the formulation of a microemulsion system, owing to the following aspects: a) better physicochemical properties as compared to that of the conventional non-ionic surfactants, b) non-toxicity, and c) biodegradability. The extraction of heavy metal ions from the metal complexes as well as the recovery efficiency of heavy metal ions using a microemulsion system has been investigated. The maximum absorbance values of metal ions, after recovery from the metal complexes, were measured. Moreover, the UV-Visible spectrophotometric studies revealed that the absorbance increases with an increase in metal ion concentration in the aqueous phase while its value decreases with an increase in the concentration of potassium thiocyanate in the aqueous phase after the extraction of the metal ions from the metal complexes. Furthermore, it has also been evaluated that 4.0 mol/L potassium thiocyanate is the optimum concentration required for efficient recovery of 0.05 mol/L cobalt ion as well as nickel ions. The recovery efficiency of cobalt ions was found to be 97%, whereas that of nickel ions was determined to be 94% respectively. In addition to being an environmentally friendly approach, the present work is an economically viable option too, as it deals with the studies related to the extraction and efficient recovery of metal ions.

In the present work, oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion systems were prepared by using the PEG-7 lauric acid glycerides as the emulsifiers and the liquid paraffin as the oil phase. The influence of processing parameters such as emulsification temperature, stirring speed, emulsifier concentration, oil-water volume ratio and polymer addition on the stability of the emulsion systems was investigated. In order to determine the optimal conditions for the preparation of the emulsion systems based on PEG-7 lauric acid glycerides, a laser drop size analyser and a rotational rheometer were used. As the stability of the O/W emulsion systems increased, the average droplet size of the O/W emulsions measured by the laser droplet size analyser became smaller and the viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus of the O/W emulsions measured by the rotational rheometer became larger. The following optimal conditions were determined in this study: emulsification temperature 80°C, stirring speed 500 r/min, emulsifier concentration 5 wt%, oil-water volume ratio 1:1 and added amount of xanthan gum 0.2 wt%. The droplet morphology of the O/W emulsion prepared under the optimal conditions, which was characterised by a super high magnification microscope, is small. Furthermore, the long-term stability of the emulsion system prepared under the optimal conditions was investigated over a period of time (4 weeks). The O/W emulsion proves to be well stable even after 4 weeks, with a water separation rate of 0%.

In this work, four quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants including cetyltrimethyl ammonium fluoride (CTAF), cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium iodide (CTAI) were investigated to study the effect of halide anions on the surface activity and foaming performance. The result showed that CTAF had superior surface activity, which could reduce the surface tension of water to 33.15 mN/m at a low CMC (critical micelle formation concentration) of 1.65 mmol/L. Based on the calculation of A min (the minimum occupied area per surfactant molecule), we assumed that this higher surface activity was related to the small ionic radius of the fluorine ion (F – ). The foamability and foam stability of CTAF has great advantages over other surfactants studied. On this basis, the factors affecting the formation and stabilization of the CTAF foam were investigated. The results showed that foam formation benefited from high temperatures and low methanol concentration, while high salinity was beneficial for foam stability. When CTAF at a concentration of 0.2% was used as a foaming agent, foaming was excellent at a methanol concentration of 10%, a salinity of 22 ⨯ 10 4 mg/L, and a temperature of 90°C. With this study, uncertainties that existed in the literature regarding the effect of anion on surface activity and foam performance were explained and the effect of temperature, methanol and salinity on foam generation and stabilization was understood.

The course of the reaction between lauric acid and monoethanolamine as well as the reaction of methyl laurate with monoethanolamine and diethanolamine were investigated. Thin layer chromatography with flame ionisation detector was used for reaction mixture analysis. The fatty acid methyl ester is more suitable for production of monoethanolamide and diethanolamide. Sodium methoxide or potassium hydroxide (0.02 mol % ester) was used as suitable alkaline catalysts of reaction. The optimal temperature of methyl laurate or coconut oil with diethanolamine reaction is 80°C. Higher temperatures (over 100°C) lead to a higher concentration of amide ester in the product.

In this work, the kinetics of the micellar catalyzed oxidation of the unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde, E-crotonaldehyde in aqueous medium under pseudo 1st-order reaction condition was spectrophotometrically investigated at 25 °C. In the spectrophotometric measurement, the rate of the reaction was recorded by the decreasing intensity of the metallic oxidant, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], in acidic aliquots at 450 nm with varying concentration of surfactants and/or heteroaromatic promoters. Spectral evidences have been produced in favour of the mechanistic approach and the product formation.

The cationically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (CMHEC) was synthesized successfully and applied for preparing the cationic asphalt emulsion. The apparent viscosity and phase separation of the emulsion were studied at different CMHEC concentrations and pH values. The results indicated that the apparent viscosity of the emulsion was increased with increasing CMHEC concentration, and the phase separation was significantly reduced correspondingly. In addition, the effect of pH value on the emulsion quality was involved. The apparent viscosity of the emulsion showed the tendency to decrease firstly and then increase to the minimum value at pH 2. All results indicated that CMHEC has excellent potential in the manufacture of asphalt emulsion and the research of the pH effect on the formulation of asphalt emulsion has essential significance.

In this paper, ammonium oleic acid salts (AOS) were prepared from oleic acid and amines and investigated as low molecular weight shale swelling inhibitors. First, the inhibitory effect of AOS was investigated using the linear expansion test of bentonite. The results show that the inhibitor prepared from oleic acid and tetraethylene pentamine with a molar ratio of 1:2 (AOS-8) has an excellent inhibitory effect on the hydration expansion of bentonite. The inhibitory effect of AOS-8 on bentonite was further investigated in subsequent work steps using various methods, including the linear swelling test of clay and particle distribution measurement. The results show that AOS-8 has superior performance in inhibiting hydration swelling and dispersion of bentonite. With 0.5% AOS-8, the swelling rate was reduced to 37.7%, and the particle size of bentonite in water could be controlled with AOS-8. Finally, the inhibition mechanism of AOS-8 was determined in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In water-based drilling fluid, AOS-8 is compatible with conventional additives. It can also significantly improve the lubricating capacity of the mud cake after ageing at 120°C.
