Zusammenfassung Der Artikel stellt die speziell in den letzten Jahren vorgesehlagenen Kriterien für eine Abgrenzung von Flexion und Derivation zusammen, ergänzt sie und untersucht ihr Verhältnis zueinander. Es wird herausgearbeitet, daß die meisten Abgrenzungskriterien (wenn auch nicht alle) keinen diskret-kategoriellen, sondern prototypischen Charakter haben.

Zusammenfassung Anhand von Beispielen der Entwicklung des Substantivplurals im Deutschen, Niederländischen und Englischen werden hier die verschiedenen Natürlichkeitsparameter beim morphologischen Wandel erörtert. In diesem Zusammenhang werden drei Arten von Faktoren aufgezeigt: sprachunabhängige (universelle) morphologische Natürlichkeit (vgl. Mayerthaler 1981), sprachspezifische morphologische Normalität (vgl. Wurzel 1984) und zuletzt phonologische Natürlichkeit, genauer silbische Natürlichkeit im Sinne von Vennemanns Präferenzgesetzen für Silbenstruktur. Im Gegensatz zu den in der Natürlichen Morphologie sonst üblichen Annahmen in diesem Bezug behaupten wir hier, daß phonologische Natürlichkeit nicht immer und nur zerstörend auf die Morphologie ein wirkt, sondern auch die Richtung des morphologischen Wandels mit beeinflussen kann, wenn z. B. neue Pluralmarker analogisch eingeführt werden. Dann wird ceteris paribus ein Marker gewählt, der die semiotisch bevorzugte ikonische Kodierung der semantisch wichtigen Kategorie Plural gewährleistet, aber dabei am wenigsten gegen die universellen Silbenstrukturpräferenzen verstößt.

The concept of linguistic “naturalness” and “natural change” has its origin in phonology: there it now not only involves the simplification of “difficult” sounds, but also phonotactic reductions which then in turn can produce highly marked units. In the ‘Eighties’, the theory of “morphological naturalness” was then put forward, with the initial postulate that all natural morphological change aims at 1 : 1 agglutination and iconic representation of the contents. Inflection which is fused and opaque on the surface is considered to be the result of disrupting sound change. Following this view, phonological naturalness and morphological naturalness stand in permanent conflict with one another. Later revisions of these proposals tried to close the gap between theory and real morphological change but continued to assume that simplicity and uniformity of the system were the aim. Arguing against these approaches, 1 propose that a good morphological theory should be able to account for increases and reductions in morphological complexity, diversity and irregularity in its own terms. This can he achieved by using conceptions of sign-theory and language economy based on both the language system and its usage with its different and changing frequencies. These are crucial in deciding whether a word-stem and its inflection are to be more condensed and therefore more irregular (up to root inflection and suppletion) or more expanded and regular (up to agglutination or syntactic; chains). A theory which upholds these principles of economy and thus more closely reflects the realities of morphological change would to my mind - if we want to use the term at all - better deserve the epithet “natural”.

The paper gives a short survey of derivational and inflectional morphology in Pidgins and Creoles. Most of these phenomena turn out to ho retentions from substratum structures rather than late borrowings or secondary innovations. This fact points to system-defining structural properties of substratum morphologies as an important factor in Creole genesis. It is argued in favour of a thorough re-evaluation of Creole data on behalf of Natural Morphology.

There is in general an accord between linguists as to the major principles used for the analysis of language. These are the compass, consistency, and economy of analyses. It can he shown that linear phonology encompasses more of its own units, phonemes, than match the speaker’s use; economises more in rules than speakers do in each style of speech; and are caused by the linguist’s ideal of economy to violate the principle of consistency by using “near-minimal” contrast where there is no minimal pair. The principles for linguists must be defined on the human being and not simply on data functioning at a single linguistic level.

This article deals with problems concerning word order in a simple statement in Arabic considering the positions of the parts of a sentence due to their valence-dependency, their syntactic function and particularly the influence of pragmatic factors. The starting point of this approach is the definition of the linear arrangement of the parts of a sentence within the topic- as well as the focus-sections. On this basis word order variation is discussed not only within the relevant section hut also beyond it. As the whole sentence is taken to be the basis for the description word order variation at the beginning of a sentence is regarded merely as a part of the more complex problem of word order variation which is examined in close connection with the description of the focus-positions possible and the communicative functions realised by them.

Résumé Vers la fin des années 70 on a mis en doute l’avis d’une absense originelle des classes nominales dans les langues Mandé. Le fondement de ces doutes était la présence d’un groupe de substantifs en Manding (surtout en Bamana) à consonnes initiales prénasalisées; tous ces substantifs se caractérisent par une sémantique spécifique. Une analyse plus minutieuse des données des langues Manding, et aussi du materiel de langues du sous-groupe Mandé Sud-Ouest, nous permet de proposer la réconstruction de trois marques de classes en Pra-Mandé - *n 1 -(apparemment, à ton haut), *n 1 -...-NDIN ou *n 1 -..,-NDIGI et *n 2 -(apparemment, à ton bas). On peut considérer comme encore une marque do classe - morphème zéro *⌀-. L’auteur présente une reconstruction du système des consonnes initiales du Pra-Sud- Ouest Mandé, en tenant compte des marques des classes indiquées. Il montre les voies do son évolution dans les langues Kpelle, Looma, Bandi, Mendé et Loko. En conclusion l’auteur fournit une liste de mots, pour lesquels on peut proposer la reconstruction du préfixe *n 2 -en Pra-Sud-Ouest Mandé.
