About this journal

Sociolinguistica is a peer-reviewed journal comprising two issues per year and covering a broad range of topics related to individual and societal language use in contexts worldwide, as well as the social conditions of language use and the impact of language on social structures. Seeking to spearhead debates on the future of macrosociolinguistics, the journal welcomes free submissions and proposals for themed issues in English, especially those aiming to thicken intersections with other fields in the social sciences and humanities. Alongside scientific articles of a more traditional format, it is open to alternative forms of scholarly writing (e.g. policy papers, opinion pieces, research reports, dialogues). It also prioritises reviews of books not published in English, so as to make accessible to a broader audience the important contributions of research conducted in other languages.

Possible topics include:

  • language and identity/religion/ethnicity/nationalism
  • language and (neo)colonialism/de-colonisation
  • language politics, policy and planning
  • language contact and conflict
  • languages maintenance, shift and revitalisation
  • language rights and linguistic justice
  • language and migration/integration

Sociolinguistica follow’s the De Gruyter standards on publication ethics, which can be found here.

Submission guidelines

Your manuscript should be submitted via the online submission system ScholarOne at: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/solin. Please select the appropriate category for the type of submission from the drop-down menu (‘research article’, ‘book review’, ’miscellaneous’ for alternative forms of scholarly writing).

Free submissions

Sociolinguistica welcomes free submissions for consideration for publication as follows:

  • research articles of around 7000-9000 words long (inclusive of references and any notes);
  • alternative forms of scholarly writing (e.g. policy papers, opinion pieces, research reports, dialogues) of around 2500-3000 words long (inclusive of references and any notes);
  • book reviews of 1500-2000 words are commissioned by the editors only, and unsolicited book reviews are not accepted.

Preparing your manuscript

  • Please format your manuscript according to the Sociolinguistica style sheet available at the bottom of this page.
  • Please ensure your submission is fully anonymised for the purposes of double-blind peer review.
  • Please check your manuscript carefully before submission in order to prevent delays and extra costs at proof stage. In-text citations should be carefully checked against works listed in the reference section for correct bibliographical details, and to ensure that all works cited are listed, and vice versa.
  • If you are not a native speaker of English, we recommend that you have your manuscript professionally edited before submission or read by a native English-speaking colleague.
  • The reproduction of figures already published elsewhere requires written permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format of the journal. De Gruyter is not able to cover any costs that may be required for permissions. If necessary, material from other sources should be used as an alternative.
  • Before submitting your article please consult De Gruyter’s Statement on Publication Ethics and Copyright Transfer Agreement.
  • If you have any general questions please visit the FAQ page for journal authors.

Special issues

Sociolinguistica welcomes proposals for special issues. Proposals should be submitted via email to the general editors (see editorial tab for email addresses). Please include the following information:

  • proposed title of the special issue
  • issue outline (3-4 pages) which includes: an explanation of what is the issue about; why is it important; the contribution it makes to the field in question; other studies conducted in this area; a bibliography of works cited
  • table of contents, including abstracts and titles of each contribution
  • list of authors (including affiliation and email addresses)
  • estimated submission date for the issue
  • short CV(s) of the guest editor(s)

In the interests of inclusivity, Sociolinguistica encourages guest editors to consider involving authors located in regions which are less represented in academic publishing.

The acceptance of a special issue proposal does not guarantee publication, and all individual articles will still need to undergo the peer-review process.

Review process

Proposals for a special issue are reviewed by the general editors.

The double-blind peer-review process for articles (including articles submitted within a special issue) takes on average two months. Submissions are sent to 2–3 reviewers. Authors will be informed by e-mail if their manuscript has been accepted or rejected or if it requires revision. Every effort is made to respond to authors in a timely manner.

Proofs

Authors will receive electronic proofs (PDF format) for correction, which must be returned by the date indicated by the publisher.

Offprints

Upon publication, authors will receive electronic offprints (in PDF format) of their contribution.

Hybrid Open Access

In this journal, authors have the option to publish their article under an open access license. Open Access allows you as an author to retain copyright and share your findings with colleagues and interested parties worldwide without any restraints.
Please note that authors from institutions with which we have a transformative agreement can publish open access without paying an article processing charge (APC). More information on the eligible institutions and articles can be found under the "Funding and Support" tab here.
