Christian theology has traditionally construed all of God’s ways of relating to creatures as a single divine movement (the ‘economy’) toward a single goal that is God’s one eternal purpose. But why it is necessary to hold that God can have only one eternal purpose? I outline two theological arguments supporting the singularity of God’s eternal purpose and argue that holding that God can have only one eternal purpose generates serious systemic problems in Christian theology. Theologians differ in their identification of God’s one overall goal and in their characterization of the way God moves toward actualization of that goal. However they agree that that movement (the ‘economy’) has three moments: creation, fall, and eschatological consummation, in each of which, except the Fall, God has a particular goal. (Examples are drawn from Irenaeus, Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth.) I argue, if God can have only one eternally decided purpose, God’s goal in one of three moments (other than the Fall) must be privileged as the overall goal of God’s single movement in relation to creatures to which the goals of the other two moments are subordinated. That sets up the systemic problem in theology. No matter which of the three goals is privileged, the character of God’s movement to the other two goals is misrepresented and doctrine about them is distorted. I then propose an alternative. Following the work of Claus Westermann I claim an exegetical basis for the proposal that the Canon exhibits three inseparable but irreducibly different narratives of ways God relates to creatures: to create, to consummate eschatologically, and to reconcile. Each has a goal that is irreducible to the other two. Zusammenfassung Die christliche Theologie hat traditionell alle Arten der Beziehung Gottes zu seiner Kreatur als eine einzige göttliche Bewegung (die ‘Ökonomie’) auf ein einziges Ziel, das Gottes ewiges Ziel ist, hin ausgelegt. Aber warum muss daran festgehalten werden, dass Gott ausschließlich ein einziges ewiges Ziel hat? Ich arbeite zwei theologische Argumente heraus, welche die Singularität von Gottes ewigem Ziel vertreten, und behaupte, dass das Festhalten an ausschließlich einem einzigen ewigen göttlichen Ziel schwere systematische Probleme in der christlichen Theologie erzeugt. Theologen weichen in ihrer Identifikation von Gottes einem übergeordneten Ziel und in ihrer Charakterisierung der Art, wie Gott sich in Richtung der Verwirklichung dieses Ziels bewegt, voneinander ab. Aber sie stimmen darin überein, dass diese Bewegung (die ‘Ökonomie’) drei Momente hat: Schöpfung, Sündenfall und die eschatologische Vollendung, in denen Gott abgesehen vom Sündefall ein je eigenes Ziel verfolgt. (Es werden Beispiele von Irenäus, Thomas von Aquin und Karl Barth angeführt.) Ich behaupte, wenn Gott nur ein ewiges entschiedenes Ziel haben kann, dass Gottes übergeordnetes Ziel in einem der drei Momente (außer im Fall) der einen Bewegung Gottes zu seinen Kreaturen bestehen und somit gegenüber den anderen beiden Zielen den Vorrang haben muss. Dies erzeugt das systematisch theologische Problem. Unabhängig davon, welches der drei Ziele privilegiert ist, wird der Charakter von Gottes Bewegung zu den beiden anderen Ziele falsch dargestellt und die Lehre von ihnen verzerrt. Ich schlage deshalb eine Alternative vor: Im Anschluss an die Arbeiten von Claus Westermann erhebe ich Anspruch auf eine exegetische Grundlage für den Vorschlag, dass der Kanon drei untrennbare, aber irreduzibel verschiedene Erzählungen von der Weise Gottes hat, in der er sich auf seine Kreaturen bezieht, zeigt: schaffen, eschatologisch vollenden und versöhnen. Jedes dieser Ziele ist gegenüber den beiden anderen irreduzibel.

Thesis of this article: For Luther and Lutherans the reality of revelation and truth is included and accessible to us in the reality of certainty, which is the essence of Christian faith. In this certainty truth is present as being revealed. This is shown by a close observation and concrete description of Christian certainty as awareness of objective truth, namely - basicly and comprehensively - as awareness of objectivity (givenness) of that truth relation (adaequatio rei ad intellectum as the basis of adaequatio intellectus ad rem), in which we and those like us find ourselves, and which in itself includes all types of objects, which are the subject-matter for our possible true (i.e., adequate) understanding: individuals, classes, individual life situations (environmental contexts and conditions of human persons), this world of ours (as the sum of all possible environmental contexts and conditions of human persons), the Absolute which lets this world be actual, and also finally - as objects of the second order - the signs and symbols by means of which we communicate the different types of objective truth. These possibilities of our adequate understanding, which are ordered to different types of objects (givens), form a continuous constitutional interrelationship, which as a whole is grounded in the possibility of an adequate understanding of the Absolute. In that sense, the sphere of objective truth, which is accessible for us, is characterized by unity, universality and totality. Conversely, because this world of ours, whose basis of existence is the creative activity of the Absolute, is a world which includes the truth relation, in which we find ourselves, therefore this truth relation, which constitutes our personhood and our world, is the gift of the Creator. In this gift, he, in his creative activity, makes himself present for us and is in this way through himself present for us. Thus the disclosedness of the described entire sphere of possible objective truth for us, which constitutes our created personhood, presents itself for faith in its entirety as the result of the revelatory and formative process (Bildungsgeschehen), wrought from the Absolute itself, by which Christian certainty has been created. The created facticity of the described sphere of possible objective truth, which is disclosed in this manner, is at the same time transparent as the created real condition of the revelatory and formative process, which leads to its being explicitly disclosed. The implications of this situation are: a) For Christian faith, the activity of revelation, which creates its certainty, is a natural activity (natural for creative as well as created personhood); b) Christian certainty is the created objective truth about the Absolute and therefore not itself absolute. Only the objective truth about the Absolute being for us as it actualizes itself (the Deus revelatus) can be certain for us and not the Absolute in itself (the Deus nudus). Das wird gezeigt durch eine genaue Betrachtung und konkrete Beschreibung von christlicher Gewissheit als Innesein von objektiver Wahrheit, nämlich - basal und umfassend - als Innesein der Objektivität (Vorgegebenheit) derjenigen Wahrheitsrelation (adaequatio rei ad intellectum als Grund der adaequatio intellectus ad rem), in welcher wir und unseresgleichen uns vorfinden und welche ihrerseits alle Typen von Objekten einschließt, die Gegenstände unseres möglichen wahren (adäquaten) Verstehens sind: Individuen, Klassen, einzelne Lebenssituationen (Umweltverhältnisse von menschlichen Personen), diese unsere Welt (Inbegriff aller möglichen Umweltverhältnisse von menschlichen Personen), das diese Welt real sein lassende Absolute; sowie schließlich auch - als Objekte zweiter Ordnung - die Zeichen und Symbole, vermittelst deren wir die verschiedenen Typen von objektive Wahrheit kommunizieren. Diese auf verschiedene Typen von Objekten (Vorgegebenheiten) gerichteten Möglichkeiten unseres adäquaten Verstehens bilden einen durchgehenden Konstitutionszusammenhang, der letztlich als ganzer in der Möglichkeit des angemessenen Verstehens des Absoluten gründet. Somit eignet der Sphäre der für uns zugänglichen objektiven Wahrheit Einheit, Universalität und Totalität. Ebenso gilt: Weil diese unsere Welt, deren Existenzgrund die sie schaffende Aktivität des Absoluten ist, diejenige Welt ist, welche die Wahrheitsrelation, in der wir uns finden, einschließt, deshalb ist diese Wahrheitsrelation, die unser Personsein und unsere Welt konstituiert, Gabe des Schöpfers, in der dieser in seiner schöpferische Aktivität sich selbst für uns präsent macht und somit selbst durch sich selbst für uns präsent ist. Somit präsentiert sich das Erschlossensein der beschriebenen Gesamtsphäre von möglicher objektiver Wahrheit für uns, die unser geschaffenes Personsein konstituiert, für den Glauben in dessen Gewissheit als das Resultat des vom Absoluten selbst gewirkten Offenbarungs- und Bildungsgeschehens, durch das die christliche Gewissheit heraufgeführt worden ist. Die dadurch erschlossene geschaffene Faktizität der beschriebenen Gesamtsphäre von möglicher objektiver Wahrheit ist somit zugleich durchsichtig als die geschaffene reale Möglichkeitsbedingung des Offenbarungs- und Bildungsgeschehens, das zu ihrer expliziten Erschlossenheit führt. Implikate dieser Situation: a) Für den christlichen Glauben ist das Offenbarungsgeschehen, das seine Gewissheit schafft, ein natürliches Geschehen (natürlich für das schaffende ebenso wie für das geschaffene Personsein); b) die christliche Gewissheit ist geschaffene objektive Wahrheit über das Absolute und daher nicht selbst absolut; uns gewiss ist nur und kann nur sein objektive Wahrheit über das Absolute-in-seinem-durch-es-selbst-realisierten-Sein-für-uns (über den Deus revelatus) und nicht über das Absolute an sich (nicht über den Deus nudus).

In their Trinitarian conceptions of God, the Cappadocians ground the divine unity in the hypostasis of the Father who is the cause of the Son and the Holy Spirit. According to Meijering, following Harnack and Holl, there is a tension between the causal priority of the Father as source of the godhead and the co-equality of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The background of the Trinitarian conceptions of the Cappadocians allegedly is Origen’s hierarchical conception of God. For that reason their conceptions are seen as a regression in comparison with the Trinitarian conception of Athanasius. This article gives a reconstruction of the Trinitarian conceptions of the Cappadocians in terms of a unique constellation of fronts. Their conceptions hold the middle position between tritheistic conceptions on the one hand, and, on the other hand, modalistic conceptions of God. Moreover, the Cappadocians take a distance from Origen’s conception of God with its hierarchical subordination of three hypostases. The background of their Trinitarian conceptions is the concept of the “unmingled unity”. Within this unity the Father has no superiority because he is not the source of the godhead. As cause, the Father has only logical priority. In conclusion, the Cappadocians stand nearer to Athanasius in their Trinitarian conceptions than to Origen, in spite of the genetic priority of the Father in the Trinitarian conception of Athanasius. Zusammenfassung In ihren trinitarischen Gotteskonzeptionen gründen die Kappadozier die göttliche Einheit auf die hypostasis des Vaters, der die Ursache des Sohnes und des heiligen Geistes ist. Nach Meijering, in Anlehnung an Harnack und Holl, gibt es eine Spannung zwischen der kausalen Priorität des Vaters als Quelle der Gottheit und dem gleichen Wesen des Vaters, des Sohnes und des heiligen Geistes. Der Hintergrund der trinitarischen Konzeptionen der Kappadozier ist scheinbar die hierarchische Gotteskonzeption des Origenes. Aus diesem Grund werden ihre Konzeptionen als ein Rückschritt gesehen im Vergleich zu der trinitarischen Konzeption des Athanasius. Dieser Artikel gibt eine Rekonstruktion der trinitarischen Konzeptionen der Kappadozier hinsichtlich einer einzigartigen Konstellation von Fronten. Ihre Konzeptionen halten die Mitte zwischen tritheistischen Konzeptionen auf der einen Seite und modalistischen Gotteskonzeptionen auf der anderen Seite. Außerdem weisen die Kappadozier die Gotteskonzeption des Origenes mit seiner hierarchischen Unterordnung der drei hypostases zurück. Der Hintergrund ihrer trinitarischen Konzeptionen liegt in der Vorstellung der “unvermischten Einheit”. Innerhalb dieser Einheit hat der Vater keine Überlegenheit, weil er nicht die Quelle der Gottheit ist. Als Ursache hat der Vater nur logische Priorität. Die Kappadozier stehen mit ihren trinitarischen Konzeptionen Athanasius näher als Origenes, trotz der genetischen Priorität des Vaters in der trinitarischen Konzeption des Athanasius.

Hight and Bohannon have recently argued that an immaterialist ontology is more consonant with the doctrine of the Incarnation. I argue that their proposal is insufficiently motivated, as their objections to a substance dualist account of the incarnation are not compelling. I defend a concrete-parts Christology, which allows for materiality and immateriality to be exemplified by Christ in two different respects. I show how immaterialist and materialist objections that dualism cannot adequately account for the unity of the incarnate Christ can be overcome. Zusammenfassung Hight und Bohannon haben kürzlich die Auffassung vertreten, dass eine immaterialistische Ontologie mehr mit der Lehre von der Inkarnation Gottes übereinstimmt als eine materialistische Ontologie. Ich behaupte, dass ihr Vorschlag insofern nicht ausreichend begründet ist, als ihre Einwände gegen eine substanzdualistische Auffassung der Inkarnation nicht überzeugend sind. Ich verteidige eine Christologie konkreter Aspekte, welche in zweierlei Hinsicht durch Christus sowohl Materialität als auch Immaterialität exemplifiziert sieht. Ich zeige, wie der immaterialistische und der materialistische Einwand, dass der Dualismus der Einheit des menschgewordenen Christus nicht ausreichend Rechnung trägt, überwunden werden kann.

The purpose of this essay is to use Luther’s lectures on “The Sacrifice of Isaac” as a case study of his approach to interpreting Scripture and the way in which he dealt with and used extra-scriptural material in his exegetical work. A marker of Luther’s approach in Genesis 22 is his admonition to the interpreter to distinguish between “who” and “what.” Luther recognized that when an interpreter focuses on the question “what” the result is the use of abstract categories and the application of a systematic overlay to Scripture. When focusing on the “who” the interpreter encounters a concrete word of command and promise, namely the thing itself (verbum efficax). For Luther, the story of Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac is not about philosophical propositions or ethical questions but is about having a God and trusting in the promises of this God. Zusammenfassung Es ist die Absicht dieser Arbeit, Luthers Vorlesungen über “Die Opferung des Isaak” als Fallstudie seines Interpretationsansatzes der Heiligen Schrift sowie die Art und Weise seiner Behandlung und seines Gebrauchs von außerbiblischem Material in seinen exegetischen Studien zu nutzen. Eine Charakteristik von Luthers Ansatz zu Genesis 22 ist seine Ermahnung an den Auslegenden, zwischen “Wer” und “Was” zu unterscheiden. Luther erkannte, dass auf eine Interpretation mit der Konzentration auf die Frage nach dem “Was” der Gebrauch von abstrakten Kategorien und die Anwendung eines systematischen Schemas auf die Schrift folgt. Liegt der Schwerpunkt jedoch auf dem “Wer”, so begegnet dem Auslegenden ein konkreter Begriff des Gebots und der Verheißung, nämlich das Ding selbst (verbum efficax). Nach Luther geht es bei der Geschichte von Abraham und der Opferung des Isaak nicht um philosophische Aussagen oder ethische Fragen, sondern um die Anwesenheit eines Gottes und das Vertrauen in die Verheißungen eben dieses Gottes.

In spite of occasional contradictions, “faith“, used interchangeably with religion, piety, awe with J.W. v. Goethe and in his poetry, is closer to Christianity (as is shown by references to a ‘personal’ god, prayer, the person and work of Christ, the cross etc. for example in “Die Geheimnisse. Fragment” [1784/85], the text of a reformation-cantata [1817] and the conclusion of “Faust” II) as is often supposed by theologians, philosophers and literary historians. Against the background of Goethe’s distinction between “common” and “special” faith this article outlines Goethe’s piety of nature, aesthetical beliefs and humanitarian religiosity, which often overlay the “special” faith which is shaped by M. Luther’s biblical theology (“law and gospel” etc.). As a religious-cultural transformation of Christianity in the crisis of clerical dogmatics on the one hand and a naturalistic world-view on the other, Goethe’s self-responsible “faith” is highly relevant in our time, seeking a spirituality of wholeness, fundamental experience and an appropriate mediation of Christian language and experience.

Open Theism provides a plausible explication of the Christian concept of a loving and acting God. It also gives a promising account of conciliating divine omniscience and human freedom by postulating a temporal God and an open future. In this essay, important lines of argumentation of Open Theists are presented, and it is examined in what different ways they deal with the apparent inconsistency of an open future and God’s definite commitment to salvation.
