We investigate the curvature of the so-called diagonal lift from an affine manifold to the linear frame bundle LM. This is an affine analogue (but not a direct generalization) of the Sasaki-Mok metric on LM investigated by L.A. Cordero and M. de León in 1986. The Sasaki-Mok metric is constructed over a Riemannian manifold as base manifold. We receive analogous and, surprisingly, even stronger results in our affine setting.

We study the existence of a skew Killing spinor on 2- and 3-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. We establish the integrability conditions and prove that these spinor fields correspond to twistor spinors in the two dimensional case while, up to a conformal change of the metric, they correspond to parallel spinors in the three dimensional case.

We present simple examples of finite-dimensional connected homogeneous spaces (they are actually topological manifolds) with nonhomogeneous and nonrigid factors. In particular, we give an elementary solution of an old problem in general topology concerning homogeneous spaces.

We calculate the singular homology and Čech cohomology groups of the Harmonic Archipelago. As a corollary, we prove that this space is not homotopy equivalent to the Griffiths space. This is interesting in view of Eda’s proof that the first singular homology groups of these spaces are isomorphic.

Using the Plücker map between grassmannians, we study basic aspects of classic grassmannian geometries. For ‘hyperbolic’ grassmannian geometries, we prove some facts (for instance, that the Plücker map is a minimal isometric embedding) that were previously known in the ‘elliptic’ case.

A singularity is said to be weakly-exceptional if it has a unique purely log terminal blow-up. In dimension 2, V. Shokurov proved that weakly-exceptional quotient singularities are exactly those of types D n, E 6, E 7, E 8. This paper classifies the weakly-exceptional quotient singularities in dimensions 3 and 4.

We describe a method to compute the Brauer-Manin obstruction for smooth cubic surfaces over ℚ such that Br(S)/Br(ℚ) is a 3-group. Our approach is to associate a Brauer class with every ordered triplet of Galois invariant pairs of Steiner trihedra. We show that all order three Brauer classes may be obtained in this way. To show the effect of the obstruction, we give explicit examples.

We study the representation theory of the solution space of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with singular potential V λ(x) = λx −2 as a representation of $\widetilde{SL(2,\mathbb{R})}$ . The subspace of solutions for which the action globalizes is constructed via nonstandard induction outside the semisimple category. By studying the subspace of K-finite vectors in this space, a distinguished family of potentials, parametrized by the triangular numbers is shown to generate a global representation of $\widetilde{SL(2,\mathbb{R})}$ ⋉ H 3, where H 3 is the three-dimensional Heisenberg group.

Let G be a locally finite group satisfying the condition given in the title and suppose that G is not nilpotent-by-Chernikov. It is shown that G has a section S that is not nilpotent-by-Chernikov, where S is either a p-group or a semi-direct product of the additive group A of a locally finite field F by a subgroup K of the multiplicative group of F, where K acts by multiplication on A and generates F as a ring. Non-(nilpotent-by-Chernikov) extensions of this latter kind exist and are described in detail.

In this paper we investigate the structure of X-groups in which every subgroup is permutable or of finite rank. We show that every subgroup of such a group is permutable.

Let C n(A,B) be the relative Hochschild bar resolution groups of a subring B ⊆ A. The subring pair has right depth 2n if C n+1(A,B) is isomorphic to a direct summand of a multiple of C n(A,B) as A-B-bimodules; depth 2n + 1 if the same condition holds only as B-B-bimodules. It is then natural to ask what is defined if this same condition should hold as A-A-bimodules, the so-called H-depth 2n − 1 condition. In particular, the H-depth 1 condition coincides with A being an H-separable extension of B. In this paper the H-depth of semisimple subalgebra pairs is derived from the transpose inclusion matrix, and for QF extensions it is derived from the odd depth of the endomorphism ring extension. For general extensions characterizations of H-depth are possible using the H-equivalence generalization of Morita theory.

The ring of constants of the Volterra derivation is found. Confirming a conjecture of Zielinski, it is always a polynomial ring.

Let G be a group, R an integral domain, and V G the R-subspace of the group algebra R[G] consisting of all the elements of R[G] whose coefficient of the identity element 1G of G is equal to zero. Motivated by the Mathieu conjecture [Mathieu O., Some conjectures about invariant theory and their applications, In: Algèbre non Commutative, Groupes Quantiques et Invariants, Reims, June 26–30, 1995, Sémin. Congr., 2, Société Mathématique de France, Paris, 1997, 263–279], the Duistermaat-van der Kallen theorem [Duistermaat J.J., van der Kallen W., Constant terms in powers of a Laurent polynomial, Indag. Math., 1998, 9(2), 221–231], and also by recent studies on the notion of Mathieu subspaces, we show that for finite groups G, V G also forms a Mathieu subspace of the group algebra R[G] when certain conditions on the base ring R are met. We also show that for the free abelian groups G = ℤn, n ≥ 1, and any integral domain R of positive characteristic, V G fails to be a Mathieu subspace of R[G], which is equivalent to saying that the Duistermaat-van der Kallen theorem cannot be generalized to any field or integral domain of positive characteristic.

In a natural way we can “lift” any operation defined on a set A to an operation on the set of all non-empty subsets of A and obtain from any algebra (A, Ω) its power algebra of subsets. In this paper we investigate extended power algebras (power algebras of non-empty subsets with one additional semilattice operation) of modes (entropic and idempotent algebras). We describe some congruence relations on these algebras such that their quotients are idempotent. Such congruences determine some class of non-trivial subvarieties of the variety of all semilattice ordered modes (modals).

We study polychromatic Ramsey theory with a focus on colourings of [ω 2]2. We show that in the absence of GCH there is a wide range of possibilities. In particular each of the following is consistent relative to the consistency of ZFC: (1) 2ω = ω 2 and $\omega _2 \to ^{poly} (\alpha )_{\aleph _0 - bdd}^2 $ for every α <ω 2; (2) 2ω = ω 2 and $\omega _2 \nrightarrow ^{poly} (\omega _1 )_{2 - bdd}^2 $ .

The connection between the functional inequalities $$f\left( {\frac{{x + y}} {2}} \right) \leqslant \frac{{f\left( x \right) + f\left( y \right)}} {2} + \alpha _J \left( {x - y} \right), x,y \in D,$$ and $$\int_0^1 {f\left( {tx + \left( {1 - t} \right)y} \right)\rho \left( t \right)dt \leqslant \lambda f\left( x \right) + \left( {1 - \lambda } \right)f\left( y \right) + \alpha _{\rm H} \left( {x - y} \right),} x,y \in D,$$ is investigated, where D is a convex subset of a linear space, f: D → ℝ, α H;α J: D-D → ℝ are even functions, λ ∈ [0; 1], and ρ: [0; 1] →ℝ+ is an integrable nonnegative function with ∫01 ρ(t) dt = 1.

We investigate the Baire classification of mappings f: X × Y → Z, where X belongs to a wide class of spaces which includes all metrizable spaces, Y is a topological space, Z is an equiconnected space, which are continuous in the first variable. We show that for a dense set in X these mappings are functions of a Baire class α in the second variable.

It is shown that all maximal regular ideals in a Hausdorff topological algebra A are closed if the von Neumann bornology of A has a pseudo-basis which consists of idempotent and completant absolutely pseudoconvex sets. Moreover, all ideals in a unital commutative sequentially Mackey complete Hausdorff topological algebra A with jointly continuous multiplication and bounded elements are closed if the von Neumann bornology of A is idempotently pseudoconvex.

Let X be a completely regular Hausdorff space, $$\mathfrak{S}$$ a cover of X, and $$C_b (X,\mathbb{K};\mathfrak{S})$$ the algebra of all $$\mathbb{K}$$ -valued continuous functions on X which are bounded on every $$S \in \mathfrak{S}$$ . A description of quotient algebras of $$C_b (X,\mathbb{K};\mathfrak{S})$$ is given with respect to the topologies of uniform and strict convergence on the elements of $$\mathfrak{S}$$ .

We prove that every Tychonoff strongly monotonically monolithic star countable space is Lindelöf, which solves a question posed by O.T. Alas et al. We also use this result to generalize a metrization theorem for strongly monotonically monolithic spaces. At the end of this paper, we study the extent of star countable spaces with k-in-countable bases, k ∈ ℤ.

Unlike for Banach spaces, the differentiability of functions between infinite-dimensional nonlocally convex spaces has not yet been properly studied or understood. In a paper published in this Journal in 2006, Bayoumi claimed to have discovered a new notion of derivative that was more suitable for all F-spaces including the locally convex ones with a wider potential in analysis and applied mathematics than the Fréchet derivative. The aim of this short note is to dispel this misconception, since it could hinder making headway in this already hard enough subject. To that end we show that Bayoumi quasi-differentiability, when properly defined, is the same as Fréchet differentiability, and that some of his alleged applications are wrong.

Using Fan’s Min-Max Theorem we investigate existence of solutions and their dependence on parameters for some second order discrete boundary value problem. The approach is based on variational methods and solutions are obtained as saddle points to the relevant Euler action functional.

In the case of initial data belonging to a wide class of functions including distributions of Gelfand-Shilov type we establish the correct solvability of the Cauchy problem for a new class of Shilov parabolic systems of equations with partial derivatives with bounded smooth variable lower coefficients and nonnegative genus. We also investigate the conditions of local improvement of the convergence of a solution of this problem to its limiting value when the time variable tends to zero.

We investigate the value distribution of meromorphic functions in the angular domain. In particular, we show a close relationship between radially distributed values and Borel directions of transcendental meromorphic functions of infinite order in some angular domains.

Let G = (V, E) be a graph. A global secure set SD ⊆ V is a dominating set which satisfies the condition: for all X ⊆ SD, |N[X] ∩ SD| ≥ | N[X] − SD|. A global defensive alliance is a set of vertices A that is dominating and satisfies a weakened condition: for all x ∈ A, |N[x] ∩ A| ≥ |N[x] − A|. We give an upper bound on the cardinality of minimum global secure sets in cactus trees. We also present some results for trees, and we relate them to the known bounds on the minimum cardinality of global defensive alliances.

A graph G is diameter-2-critical if its diameter is two and the deletion of any edge increases the diameter. In this paper we characterize the diameter-2-critical graphs with no antihole of length four, that is, the diameter-2-critical graphs whose complements have no induced 4-cycle. Murty and Simon conjectured that the number of edges in a diameter-2-critical graph of order n is at most n 2/4 and that the extremal graphs are complete bipartite graphs with equal size partite sets. As a consequence of our characterization, we prove the Murty-Simon Conjecture for graphs with no antihole of length four.

Let H be a hypergraph on n vertices and m edges with all edges of size at least four. The transversal number τ(H) of H is the minimum number of vertices that intersect every edge. Lai and Chang [An upper bound for the transversal numbers of 4-uniform hypergraphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 1990, 50(1), 129–133] proved that τ(H) ≤ 2(n+m)/9, while Chvátal and McDiarmid [Small transversals in hypergraphs, Combinatorica, 1992, 12(1), 19–26] proved that τ(H) ≤ (n + 2m)/6. In this paper, we characterize the connected hypergraphs that achieve equality in the Lai-Chang bound and in the Chvátal-McDiarmid bound.

If X is a geodesic metric space and x 1; x 2; x 3 ∈ X, a geodesic triangle T = {x 1; x 2; x 3} is the union of the three geodesics [x 1 x 2], [x 2 x 3] and [x 3 x 1] in X. The space X is δ-hyperbolic (in the Gromov sense) if any side of T is contained in a δ-neighborhood of the union of the two other sides, for every geodesic triangle T in X. We denote by δ(X) the sharp hyperbolicity constant of X, i.e., δ(X) = inf {δ ≥ 0: X is δ-hyperbolic}. We obtain information about the hyperbolicity constant of cubic graphs (graphs with all of their vertices of degree 3), and prove that for any graph G with bounded degree there exists a cubic graph G* such that G is hyperbolic if and only if G* is hyperbolic. Moreover, we prove that for any cubic graph G with n vertices, we have δ(G) ≤ min {3n/16 + 1; n/4}. We characterize the cubic graphs G with δ(G) ≤ 1. Besides, we prove some inequalities involving the hyperbolicity constant and other parameters for cubic graphs.

The geometry of complex networks is closely related with their structure and function. In this paper, we investigate the Gromov-hyperbolicity of the Newman-Watts model of small-world networks. It is known that asymptotic Erdős-Rényi random graphs are not hyperbolic. We show that the Newman-Watts ones built on top of them by adding lattice-induced clustering are not hyperbolic as the network size goes to infinity. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the effects of various parameters on hyperbolicity in this model.

A family of nonlinear conservative finite difference schemes for the multidimensional Boussinesq Paradigm Equation is considered. A second order of convergence and a preservation of the discrete energy for this approach are proved. Existence and boundedness of the discrete solution on an appropriate time interval are established. The schemes have been numerically tested on the models of the propagation of a soliton and the interaction of two solitons. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed family of schemes is about two times more accurate than the family of schemes studied in [Kolkovska N., Two families of finite difference schemes for multidimensional Boussinesq paradigm equation, In: Application of Mathematics in Technical and Natural Sciences, Sozopol, June 21–26, 2010, AIP Conf. Proc., 1301, American Institute of Physics, Melville, 2010, 395–403].

We investigate quadrature rules with Laplace end corrections that depend on a parameter β. Specific values of β yield sixth order rules. We apply our results to approximating the sum of slowly converging series s = Σi=1∞ f(i + 1/2) where f ∈ C 6 with its sixth derivative of constant sign on [m, ∞) and ∫ m∞ f(x)dx is known for m ∈ ℕ. Several examples show the efficiency of this method. This paper continues the results from [Solak W., Szydełko Z., Quadrature rules with Gregory-Laplace end corrections, J. Comput. Appl. Math., 1991, 36(2), 251–253].
