Both statistical and non-statistical analysis supports a claim that the Latin of Cicero is SDOV. Of 24 bitransitive strings from a representative sample, 21 show either the SDOV order or its common alternate SODV, or are principled departures from these orders, generally from SDOV. SDOV is the rule in clauses that are (1) discourse neutral, that (2) present special discourse challanges either because they involve gapped constituents or are expecially long, or that (3) have verbs of transfer that are lexically marked, e.g. donare 'gift with'. But those few clauses that do depart radically from the SDOV order, e.g. VOD, VDO, DVO, are always short, simplex, well contexted, and semantically simple. The 42 unitransitive clauses from Cat.l. that manifest three nuclear constituents are distributed as follows: 26 SOV, 12 OSV, 2 each SVO and OVS. This in conjunction with the SDOV data confirm the validity of the unitransitive-bitransitive entailment principle (SDOV=SOV) of Blansitt (1973) for this variety of Latin. The Latin of Cicero has a much more rigid word order than generally thought. An understanding of the constraints serves to establish a point of departure for the further study of the NP displacement system of Latin and of word order in other varieties.

This work investigates the effects of the application of a categorial grammar to Latin syntax. Due to the wide variety of constructions admitted in Latin, the analysis will focus on those properties of lexical items which more directly and intuitively offer the opportunity of evaluating the salient aspects and the effectiveness of the categorial strategy. Subcategorization properties of lexical items and certain word order patterns are considered in this perspective, and a picture of the case system is suggested, representing the traditional cases in terms of the categorial notation implemented by an appropriate system of syntactic features.

Résumé On part de la constatation qu'en latin l'emploi du r6flexif anaphorique (se, sui, sibi et l'adjectif suits) est trös röpandu et qu'il ne vient pas άέίοιιτηέ pour exprimer le passif (le passif-r6flexif) comme il arrive dans les langues romanes d6riv6es du latin. En effet le rfiflexif verbal est bien present meme en latin, particultörement dans le latin vulgaire, mais tout-ä-fait avec une frdquence qui ne peut pas etre comparde avec la frdquence et la rdgularitd d'emploi des langues romanes. De Iii on est renvoy6 k la comparaison avec le grec qui a conservd le medium ancien. De cette comparaison l'auteur, en employant la «Government and Binding Theory» de Noam Chomsky et notament le principe qu'une anaphore doit etre liie, lorsqu'un pronom est libre, est arrivd ä constater que le grec nous p6rmit d'atteindre une interessante ddcouverte: le grec emploi le Ncl (Nominativus cum Infinitivo), dans quelque construction et meme le pronom αυτός, mais en nominatif, par exemple: (1) Κλέωι/j ούκ εφη αύτός; αλλ' εκείνοι^ [sc. Νικίοα/] στρατηγεί/ (Th.4,28) S'il emploie l'anaphore, alors l'anaphore est ä l'accusatif: (2) Κροίσος έι/όμισε έωυτόι/j eu>ai ά/θρώπωι/ άπάι/των όλβιώτατο^ (Her.1,34). Comme le ddmonstre la phrase (1) le pronom peut se rdferer au sujet de la principale seulement s'il est au nominatif, s'il est ä l'accusatif, la r6f6rence du pronom est k un autre terme, comme il arrive avec έκεΐι/οι/ dans la phrase (1). Cela ddmontre, en s'accordant parfaitfement avec les logiciens et la thöorie du Binding de Chomsky, que l'accusatif dans la construction grecque et latine du Acl (Accusativus cum Infinitivo) ddnote une position transparente de laquelle vient exportd le terme en accusatif. Alors le cas accusatif dans la construction Acl indique simplement la position transparente qui va disparaitre lorsque l'on emploie le nominatif (Ncl) comme il arrive dans les phrases opaques oü l'on trouve l'INFLection: (3) Pierre; pensait qu' ilj avait raison.
