In this paper, the performance of wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON) system using the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is optimized and evaluated. The optimization is analyzed by finding the EDFA length range at which the output power produced are the highest and the pump power range at which the gain flatness produced are within the effective range (0.3 dB). After the optimization process, the optimized EDFA system produces the gain of 26.6±0.292 dB, noise figure of 3.82 dB and output power of 7 dBm and the system is then implemented into WDM system. The performance of WDM system is compared against the system without EDFA in terms of bit error rate (BER). Results obtained prove that the proposed system with the EDFA consistently performs better than the conventional system.

In this paper we proposed a new structure of two-dimensional photonic crystals with rectangular lattice. After deducing the primitive lattice vectors and first Brillouin zone of the structures, we studied the band gap properties of horizontal and vertical rectangular lattice structures and compared them with conventional square lattice structure. The most excellent characteristic of these structures is their joint band gap regions, which make them suitable for designing polarization-independent devices. The other advantage of these structures is having band gaps at higher normalized frequencies.

We analyze an optical fiber sensor based on a concatenated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with long period grating (LPG) with transfer matrix method and experiment. First, we optimize parameters of concatenated structure in the method of simulation and discuss the influence that the lengths, periods and dc induced index changes of FBG and LPG and length of optical fiber between LPG and FBG has to influence reflection spectrum. Second, based on the optimized parameters for concatenated structure, fabricate such structure and use it to monitor concentration and temperature simultaneously. Simulation result proves that increasing the lengths of FBG and LPG properly, and length of optical fiber between LPG and FBG fixed in 20 mm, more clearly reflection spectrum can be obtained. Experiment result shows a novel optical fiber sensor based on a concatenated strong fiber Bragg grating with a weak long period grating (CLBG) device can be used to monitor concentration and temperature simultaneously. The result of research has reference value in multi-parameter simultaneously sensing.

A novel architecture of optical access network based on round shift method is proposed. Round shift method is composed by round service mode of carriers and cycle characteristic of 2× N arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). By utilizing the round service mode, every carrier is tri-reused to provide service for three different optical network units. Besides, in remote node, the 2×3 N AWG can be replaced by three 2× N AWGs and AWGs’ channel spacing is increased. So, the demand on RN’s AWGs is decreased. Furthermore, based on the cycle characteristic of 2× N AWG, a 1+1 protection scheme is presented to provide independent protection for distribution fibers. Simulation and analysis show the proposed scheme works well.

In this paper, performance analysis of high-speed superdense wavelength-division-multiplexing (SDWDM) optical add–drop multiplexer (OADM) optical ring network for 6 nodes, 45 wavelengths having channel spacing of 0.2 nm on 300 km unidirectional nonlinear single-mode fiber ring of 10 Gbit/s has been reported. The performance optimization of the system by comparing different modulation formats has been reported on the basis of eye diagram and bit error rate (BER). It has been reported that CSRZ modulation format can achieve BER as better as e-24, which gives best performance. This paper also presents a study of performance degradation caused by the crosstalk and the effect of channel spacing on SWDM system.

With the ever-increasing traffic demands, infrastructure of the current 10 Gbps optical network needs to be enhanced. Further, since the energy crisis is gaining increasing concerns, new research topics need to be devised and technological solutions for energy conservation need to be investigated. In all-optical mixed line rate (MLR) network, feasibility of a lightpath is determined by the physical layer impairment (PLI) accumulation. Contrary to PLI-aware routing and wavelength assignment (PLIA-RWA) algorithm applicable for a 10 Gbps wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) network, a new Routing, Wavelength, Modulation format assignment (RWMFA) algorithm is required for the MLR optical network. With the rapid growth of energy consumption in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), recently, lot of attention is being devoted toward “green” ICT solutions. This article presents a review of different RWMFA (PLIA-RWA) algorithms for MLR networks, and surveys the most relevant research activities aimed at minimizing energy consumption in optical networks. In essence, this article presents a comprehensive and timely survey on a growing field of research, as it covers most aspects of MLR and energy-driven optical networks. Hence, the author aims at providing a comprehensive reference for the growing base of researchers who will work on MLR and energy-driven optical networks in the upcoming years. Finally, the article also identifies several open problems for future research.

In this paper, the performance of N × 80 Gb/s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed (DWDM) optical system is evaluated. Improved performance has been reported for CSRZ-DPSK signal with optimized alternate polarization (al-P), over 3120 km of SSMF using 80-km amplified spans in comparison to al-P RZ-DPSK. Investigations were conducted at 0.8 nm and 0.64 nm channel spacing. The results show that the CSRZ-DPSK signal with optimized al-P offers excellent performance for lower line width lasers. Orthogonal polarization and narrow spectrum of CSRZ-DPSK offer 5 dB improvement in quality factor for high-input power per channel with consistent performance over wider line widths.

Analysis is carried out to evaluate the conditional bit error rate conditioned on a given value of pointing error for a Free Space Optical (FSO) link with multiple receivers using Equal Gain Combining (EGC). The probability density function (pdf) of output signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also derived in presence of pointing error with EGC. The average BER of a SISO and SIMO FSO links are analytically evaluated by averaging the conditional BER over the pdf of the output SNR. The BER performance results are evaluated for several values of pointing jitter parameters and number of IM/DD receivers. The results show that, the FSO system suffers significant power penalty due to pointing error and can be reduced by increasing in the number of receivers at a given value of pointing error. The improvement of receiver sensitivity over SISO is about 4 dB and 9 dB when the number of photodetector is 2 and 4 at a BER of 10 –10 . It is also noticed that, system with receive diversity can tolerate higher value of pointing error at a given BER and transmit power.

In this paper, we presented the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system based on optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM). We analysed the effect of loss on Q factor and BER for different fiber lengths. The NRZ modulation format is used for transmitting the signal for 9.953-Gb/s 16-channel WDM system based on OADM.

In this paper, after examining all the basic design issues of CATV systems, prominent distortions like harmonic and intermodulation distortions are taken into account for different order. Besides outer distortions for CATV sources, inner distortion of relative intensity to noise is disabled for current analysis.

A dedicated Free Space Optical Link (FSOL) for the range of 0.5 km at an altitude of 15.25 m is established and explained. The power levels of the received signal with meteorological parameters are continuously measured using the opto-electronic assembly and developed weather station respectively and stored in a computer. The existing models selected for comparative analysis are briefed. Measured meteorological parameters and optical attenuation of size [2000×4] are used for linear regression analysis as well as to design the mathematical models more suitable at the test field. In addition, the prediction accuracy of the proposed and selected models during different seasons in one-year period are investigated and validated in terms of RMSE. The average Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.041 dB/km for the optical attenuation is achieved in the longer range dynamic of meteorological parameters during different local seasons.
