In modern aircraft engines, a high number of complex high-performance components are employed, which are partly subjected to extreme loading. For instance, the high-pressure turbine blades of the first stage after the combustor are both thermally-mechanically loaded and experience severe corrosive attack. Therefore they are furnished with several protective systems in order to improve the fatigue life and reliability of the high-temperature material blades employed. A ceramic thermal barrier coating insulates the internally and film-cooled blades against the hot gas stream whilst the underlying layer (PtAl, Al, MCrAlY) protects the substrate material against corrosive attack and oxidation. Owing to the low electrical conductivity of the materials employed in the multilayered system of the high-pressure turbine blades with layer thicknesses of 20–150 μm, conventional eddy-current and thermographic technologies are only suitable to a limited extent to non-destructively detect the condition of the individual layers separately from the substrate material. In contrast to this, with the aid of multi-parameter, high-frequency eddy-current technologies and high-frequency induction thermography using pulsed excitation, the eddy-currents with test frequencies in the mega-Hertz range (up to 100 MHz) can be limited to the near subsurface and produce standard penetration depths of <50 μm; which enables the layer and substrate materials to be differentially studied. The objective of the present study was to non-destructively detect the condition of the coatings, to characterise and determine the thickness of the coating as well as to detect the condition of the substrate material and sensitively analyse local damage and defects.

Kurzfassung Für die zeitnahe Regelung von Anlagen zur Niederdruckaufkohlung werden robuste Sensoren und Messsysteme benötigt, die ein Signal zu dem momentan in den Werkstof übergehenden Kohlenstof liefern. Für diese Applikation wurde ein coulometrischer Festelektrolytsensor auf der Basis von stabilisiertem Zirconiumdioxid eingesetzt, der die kontinuierliche Umsetzung eines Teilstroms des Ofenabgases mit Sauerstof ermöglicht. Untersuchungen mit diesem Sensor im Labor und an einer Einkammer-Anlage im Vergleich mit einem H 2 -Wärmeleitfähigkeitssensor (WLD) zeigen, dass der Titrationsstrom deutlich schneller reagiert als das Signal des WLD und nach einer Kalibrierung als direktes Maß für den Kohlenstofübergang herangezogen werden kann. Der Vergleich der mit dem coulometrischen Sensor online gemessenen integralen Kohlenstofübertragung mit dem oline bestimmten Kohlenstofproil der behandelten Werkstücke zeigt im Rahmen der erreichbaren Genauigkeit eine zufriedenstellende Übereinstimmung.

The paper covers the effect of various heat treatment conditions, with a focus on short-cycle heat treatment, on the mechanical properties (hardness and toughness) of the steels 51CrV4, 74NiCr2 mod. and 100Cr6. To determine this property-relationship, micro-impact samples were heat treated under various conditions in a dilatometer. Afterwards the samples were tested regarding their impact toughness and Vickers hardness. Furthermore, additional investigations of the microstructure (optical), the retained austenite content (XRD) and the fracture behaviour (SEM) were performed. Selected dilatometric measurements on the transformation behaviour after short austenizing durations completed the investigation program. Tempering at temperatures in the range of 200 °C always provided a favourable property-relationship. While short-cycle heat treatment conditions only lead to a slightly reduced toughness at similar hardness, overheating resulted in a more significant loss in toughness with different severity for the three steel grades. Microstructural investigations provide additional information to explain this behaviour.

Kurzfassung Das Nitrieren und Nitrocarburieren zeichnet sich durch eine von anderen Verfahren der Randschichttechnik unerreichte Anwendungsvielfalt aus, die sich aus der Struktur nitrierter Randschichten und der Variationsbreite nitrierbarer Werkstoffe ergibt. Die einzigartige Kombination einer dünnen Hartstoffschicht, der Verbindungsschicht, mit einer dickeren, ausscheidungsverfestigten arteigenen Stützschicht ist nur für Nitrierschichten charakteristisch. Beginnend vom Gusseisen über die unlegierten und niedriglegierten Stähle bis zu den hochlegierten nichtrostenden Stählen und hochlegierten pulvermetallurgisch erzeugten Werkzeugstählen sind alle Eisenwerkstoffe nitrierbar. Die optimale Nutzung dieses hohen Eigenschaftspotenzials erfordert die gezielte Erzeugung beanspruchungsgerechter Nitrierschichten durch ein kontrolliertes Nitrieren.

The distortion of steel flat ring type products after fine-blanking and subsequent carbonitriding was investigated. All the analyzed products were produced from the same coil and under the same conditions of fine-blanking. The fine blanked products were afterwards heat treated by using three different procedures – carbonitriting, stress relief annealing and heat treatment in a neutral atmosphere under the same temperature regime as for carbonitriding. The contribution of fine-blanking, relief of residual stresses, uneven heating and cooling and the formation of carbonitrided cases on the overall distortion were determined. The results were complemented with hardness measurements, residual stresses measurements and observations of microstructure. The presented research work is the first step towards the understanding of the mechanisms and factors that influence the quality of the final products during the production cycle.

Kurzfassung Die Heißzerspanung ist seit über 60 Jahren Forschungsthema und wird zum Teil für die Bearbeitung von schwer zerspanbaren Werkstoffen angewendet. Für den wirtschaftlichen Einsatz der Heißzerspanung sind die richtige Auswahl und die Energieeffizienz der Wärmequelle von großer Bedeutung. Als alternativer Lösungsansatz wird an der Stiftung Institut für Werkstofftechnik (IWT) in Bremen seit 2010, im Rahmen des Clusterprojektes EcoForge, die Heißzerspanung von ausscheidungshärtenden ferritisch-perlitischen Stählen unter Nutzung der vorhandenen Wärmeenergie aus dem Schmiedeprozess erforscht. Die Ziele sind dabei, das Potenzial der Heißzerspanung aufzuzeigen und durch die Integration der Zerspanung in die Wärmebehandlungsroute die Prozesskette deutlich zu verkürzen. In diesem Beitrag werden Ergebnisse von Werkzeugverschleißuntersuchungen beim Außenrund-Längsdrehen mit beschichteten Hartmetallwerkzeugen am Werkstoff 38MnVS6 in zwei Gefügevarianten, Ferrit-Perlit und unterer Bainit, bei 20 °C und 500 °C dargestellt und diskutiert.
