Friction welding is a joining technique for wood materials. The positive aspects of this technique are the speed of processing and the absence of chemical or mechanical agents, but the welded joints are not water resistant. To understand better the effect of moisture on the fracture behavior of welded joints, their fracture characteristics have been investigated. The double cantilever beam specimens were tested, which permit to compute the mode I energy release rate of a welded joint. The results confirm the negative effect of moisture on the fracture properties of the joint. The data concerning the maximal tensile strength of the joining material were collected by uniaxial tests and implemented in a finite element model to establish a cohesive law, which describes the behavior of welded pieces in terms of moisture content.

As a second part of this series, the present study also addresses the water resistance of joints obtained by friction welding. Here, the mode II fracture is in focus, that is, 4-points end-notched flexure specimens (4-ENF) were investigated with various moisture contents (MCs). The critical energy release rate was decreasing at higher MCs. The maximal shear strength of the joining material, as determined by torsion tests, was also affected by high MCs. The experimental data were implemented in a finite element model (FEM) based on the cohesive law to simulate the behavior of welded connection in 4-ENF tests. The FEM results describe well the experimental load-displacement curves.

Recently, a method was presented for the dissolution and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of cell wall components in lignocellulosic biomass, which involves cell wall ball-milling, dissolution in ionic liquids (ILs), in situ acetylation, and the recovery of acetylated materials. However, the dissolution in ILs and the relatively long ball-milling times may partially degrade the plant cell wall components. In the present study, the molecular weight (MW) distributions of acetylated biomasses from fir ( Abies sachalinensis ), birch ( Betula platyphylla ), and bamboo ( Phyllostachys nigra ) recovered from IL systems were examined by size exclusion chromatography. The effects of IL types, cosolvents, dissolution temperatures and times, and ball-milling times were evaluated. The MW of acetylated fir woods recovered from 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride at 30–80°C or from 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride at 100°C for 2 h were similar to those materials that were recovered from the N -methylimidazole/dimethyl sulfoxide system. In contrast, a significant decrease in MW was observed with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim]OAc) even at 30°C. The degradation of cell wall components in [Emim]OAc was reduced to some extent in the presence of N , N -dimethylacetamide or pyridine. The MW decreased gradually with increased ball-milling time.

The study is aiming at the finding of optimal pulping conditions for the alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping process applied to larch in terms of brightness (% ISO) and tensile strength (TS). Based on three variables, the Box-Behnken experimental design was applied to determine the effects of the first-stage and second-stage dosages of H 2 O 2 and the impregnation temperature on % ISO and TS. The equations based on the quadratic regression analysis were developed, which describe the response behaviors as the simultaneous functions of the selected independent variables. The best brightness achieved was 75.4% ISO under the following conditions: first-stage H 2 O 2 3.5%, second-stage H 2 O 2 3.54%, and impregnation temperature 81.4°C. The best TS (37.2 N·m g -1 ) was found under the following conditions: first-stage H 2 O 2 2.4%, second-stage H 2 O 2 3.9%, and impregnation temperature 90°C.

Primary refined softwood was subjected to high-consistency (HC) or low-consistency (LC) secondary refining, and the nature of the development of the internal and external fiber microstructure and ultrastructure has been compared. The primary refining of mixed softwood as a raw material was performed in pilot scale by the advanced thermomechanical pulp process. The study was aiming at the comparative characterization of LC and HC pulps at the fiber level when produced with similar and well-characterized handsheet properties. The formerly described Simons’ staining method was applied. A significant degree of fiber wall delamination/internal fibrillation (D/IF) was observed during both LC and HC refining. Both the energy input and the refining consistency had a significant impact on elevating the degree of fiber wall D/IF. The statistical evaluation of internal fiber development indicated that the fiber populations in LC- and HC-refined pulps had a similar degree of fiber wall D/IF despite having a large difference in refining energy input (420 kW h odt -1 ), confirming that D/IF was promoted more energy-efficiently in LC than in HC refining. The characteristic of the external fiber development from HC and LC refining was very different. Secondary LC refining promoted fiber surfaces with ribbons of thin hairlike threads arising from the inner secondary S2 layer that occasionally developed along the whole fiber length. Broad sheet- and lamellae-type external fibrillation from the S2 was typical for HC refining, and these characteristics were rarely observed in the LC pulps. The mechanisms for LC and HC fiber development are proposed. The cell wall characteristics (internal and external) of the pulp fibers appear to govern most of the physical and optical properties in handsheets.

Yew ( Taxus baccata L.) longbow was the preferred weapon in the Middle Ages until the emergence of guns. In this study, the tensile, compression, and bending properties of yew were investigated. The advantage of yew over the other species in the study was also confirmed by a simple beam model. The superior toughness of yew has the effect that a yew longbow has a higher range compared with bows made from other species. Unexpectedly, the mechanical performance of a bow made from yew is influenced by the juvenile-to-mature wood ratio rather than by the heartwood-to-sapwood ratio. A yew bow is predicted to have maximized performance at a juvenile wood content of 30–50%, and located at the concave side (the compressive side facing the bowyer). Here, the stiffness and yield stress in compression should be as high as possible.

A heuristic wood density prediction model has been developed by means of artificial neural networks (ANNs). Four populations of 32-year-old coastal Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. menziesi ) trees representing 20 full-sib families growing on comparable sites were in focus of this study. Tree height, diameter, volume, wood density, and acoustic velocity data from 632 trees were considered for the calculations. Two different ANN platforms were developed employing different classes and architectures, namely, the multilayer feed-forward (MLFF) and modular (MOD) models. After establishing the optimal configuration of the model, a MLFF network and a MOD neural network (with the obtained optimal structure) were developed and tested without cross-validation by employing a typical training and testing set methodology. To this purpose, the data set was divided in 480 trees for training and 152 trees for validation. A significant relationship between actual and predicted wood density was obtained with R 2 values of 0.50 and 0.52 for the two networks, respectively, demonstrating their predictive potential for wood density estimation. A classic multiple regression analysis produced substantially lower predictive power with an R 2 of 0.23. The application of ANNs as a viable predictive tool in determining wood density using growth and acoustic velocity data without additional intrusive sampling and laboratory work was demonstrated. An additional work including other species is required for these approaches.

During the rotary peeling of veneer for plywood or the laminated veneer lumber manufacture, checks are formed in the veneer that are as deep as 70–80% of the veneer thickness. The results of this study show that, during adhesive bond testing, deep lathe checks in birch ( Betula pendula Roth.) veneer significantly reduce the shear strength and the percent wood failure of phenol-formaldehyde (PF) – bonded plywood. The results also show that specimens tested with the checks pulled open or closed can fail by different mechanisms. Dried rotary peeled birch veneers were sanded to create uniform surfaces with lathe check depths varying from 30% to 90% of veneer thickness. Then, 7-ply plywood was manufactured with a commercial PF resin. After the preparation of the test specimens, the check depth of each specimen was measured microscopically. Subsequently, bond quality was measured according to EN 314. The results show that veneer checking alone can bring EN 314 specimens to the brink of failure even with an excellent adhesive. These findings stress the importance of measuring the depth of lathe checks and considering the orientations of checks during the testing to get a better understanding of bond quality in veneer-based products.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been investigated for their potential as reagents for enhancing the fire resistance of wood. The following ILs were in focus: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C2mim][PF 6 ]). Supposedly, these ILs do not dissolve or degrade wood components to a large extent. No morphologic changes were observed in any IL-treated wood samples, but they showed an enhanced fire resistance compared with that of untreated wood. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated that the ILs are penetrated into the cell walls. The wood treated with [C2mim][PF 6 ] exhibited the highest fire resistance based on thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyzer studies: it was more resistant against flaming at approximately 350°C and the subsequent glowing at higher temperatures. This enhanced fire resistance was interpreted by dehydration in the presence of the ILs under observation. In general, ILs are promising reagents for improving the thermal properties of wood.

Archaeological waterlogged woods (WLW) become considerably fragile over time because of chemical hydrolysis and the deterioration by microorganisms in the wet buried environment. The methods are sought for the dimensional stabilization of such woods. In the present article, the conservation of archaeological WLW of Chamaecyparis pisifera (Sieb. et Zucc.) Endl. by means of a commercially available feather keratin was in focus. The impregnation of an ancient wood from the 9th century A.D. was examined by the noninvasive synchrotron X-ray microtomography, which is well suited for imaging fragile samples. The thickness of the cell walls of keratin-treated wood was preserved and was comparable with that of recent wood. Notably, the middle lamella (ML) of keratin-treated wood appeared to be electron dense as indicated by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, it can be concluded that feather keratin is predominantly adsorbed on the ML and it prevents wood cell walls from collapsing and provides reinforcement.

The influence of oscillating climate conditions during the conventional drying of beech timber on drying time and drying quality has been analyzed. Three conventional drying cycles were carried out as well as nine cycles, in which the oscillations of equilibrium moisture content (EMC), temperature, and their combination were applied. The combinations of two amplitudes (10% or 20%) and two frequencies (3 or 6 h) were used in different test runs. Higher drying quality regarding casehardening was achieved both in runs with oscillations of EMC (gap values 2.2–2.4 mm) and in runs with temperature oscillations (gap values 2.3–2.4 mm) compared with conventional runs (gap values 2.5–2.9 mm). The oscillations of both temperature and EMC did not improve any of the observed parameters.

Sapwood sawdust from southern pine was treated with micronized copper (MC) under various conditions and the mobilized copper(II) (Cu mob ) concentrations were determined in the treated wood by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The spectral parameters for the copper sulfate (CuSO 4 )-treated sapwood and those of the MC-treated sapwood were very similar. A linear correlation was found between the intensities of copper (Cu) EPR spectra and those of Cu energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy in a series of CuSO 4 -treated sapwood reference samples. Thus, the EPR signal intensities could be reliably correlated to the mass of reacted Cu present using this calibration curve. The amount of the Cu mob in sawdust treated by MC suspensions increased during the first 2–3 days after the initial treatment and then reached a maximum during the 7-day monitoring period. In the case of the treatment with MC alone or MC azole, an increased MC concentration led to an elevated amount of Cu (to a maximum of ∼0.23% Cu) solubilized by the sapwood. If the wood was treated with MC quat, the Cu mob initially increased, but at higher concentrations the Cu mob content decreased, due to the interference by the quat cobiocide on the acid reaction between the wood and the basic Cu carbonate. An examination of commercially-treated wood confirmed the laboratory observations.

In the last decades, many wood preservatives have been prohibited for their ecotoxicity. The present article is focusing on the conifer-derived condensed tannins as environment-friendly options for the substitution of artificial wood preservatives. Eight different tannin fractions were extracted from spruce cones, spruce barks, and pine cones. The parameters of tannin extraction, such as the methods of purification and concentration of active components in the extracts, have been investigated. The cone and bark extracts were tested for the growth inhibition of eight brown-rot fungi, three white-rot fungi, and four soft-rot fungi in liquid cultures. The cone tannins provided a more efficient fungal growth inhibition than bark tannins. Purification increased the antifungal properties of the extracts. The growth of brown-rot fungi was inhibited by the tannins already at low concentrations. However, the extracts were not effective against the white-rot or soft-rot fungi. More investigation is needed concerning the tannin source and the purification procedure of the extracts before tannins can be considered as an ecologically benign wood preservative.
