About this journal

Objective
Gender and Sustainability in the Global South (GSGS) is an international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed and open-access journal. The journal aims to play a key role in developing and strengthening knowledge production about gender and sustainability and to promote wider communication among scholars, practitioners and policy-makers around the world. We also hope that it will be a key vehicle for research on gender and sustainability from different perspectives on topics ranging from social, economic, political, environmental, and cultural issues. The journal will be of interest to researchers, academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students, practitioners in the field of gender studies, international development, and sustainable development studies, as well as policy-makers.

Examining Types of Domestic Violence Against Afghan Women in Mashhad, Iran

This study aims to explore the dimensions of domestic violence against Afghan women living in Mashhad, Iran, and identify the factors contributing to this violence. Domestic violence is a significant societal issue, particularly among migrant communities. Afghan women, who often face socio-economic challenges, are at a heightened risk of experiencing violence. The study examines the impact of socio-cultural factors such as age, marital type, unemployment, and family income on domestic violence. The research employs a survey-based approach with a sample of 400 married Afghan women residing in Mashhad. Data were collected through interviews using snowball sampling and analyzed using SPSS software. Likert scale items were used to examine social factors influencing the four dimensions of domestic violence: psychological, physical, sexual, and economic. The study finds a significant relationship between the age of women, low family income, unemployment of husbands, and the occurrence of domestic violence. Women in non-consensual traditional marriages are more likely to experience violence. Additionally, physical and economic violence are more prevalent among unemployed husbands and those with lower educational levels. The findings confirm that age, financial status, marital type, and employment significantly contribute to domestic violence against Afghan women. These results underscore the need for targeted interventions to address these factors and improve the welfare of Afghan migrant women in Mashhad.

Girls’ Education Still at Risk? Interplay of SDT and Intersectionality in Dropout Analysis

This study examines the factors influencing dropout rates among girls in secondary schools in Lilongwe Rural East and West Districts, Malawi, utilizing Self-Determination Theory and Intersectionality Theory. Through a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative data from structured surveys and qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses, including Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Hierarchical Linear Modeling, logistic regression, path analysis, and discriminant analysis, identified significant predictors and constructs influencing dropout rates. Qualitative data provided a contextual understanding of the girls’ experiences. The findings reveal that perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness are critical constructs impacting dropout rates. Distance to school, household responsibilities, and socioeconomic status significantly influence the likelihood of dropping out. The study underscores the importance of addressing both psychological needs and socioeconomic barriers to enhance educational retention. Implications for policymakers and educators include developing targeted interventions that foster intrinsic motivation and address intersectional disadvantages, contributing to the broader goals of gender equality and sustainable development.

Ageism and Intergenerational Dynamics in the Workplace: A Scoping Review with Implications for Gender and Sustainable Human Resource Management (HRM)

This scoping review explores the complex dynamics of ageism and intergenerational relations within workplace settings, providing insights into how these phenomena shape organizational culture, employee engagement, and workplace inclusivity. Using a systematic search across five databases, we identified 25 studies that examine various aspects of age-based discrimination and generational interactions in the workplace. Key findings suggest that an inclusive intergenerational climate can buffer against ageism, enhance job satisfaction, and improve retention across age groups. The review highlights the compounded challenges faced by older workers, especially older women, suggesting a need for research on gendered ageism and its impact on older female workers. The findings underscore the importance of human resource management (HRM) practices that foster knowledge sharing and mutual respect across generations, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to gender equality, decent work, and reduced inequalities. Additionally, this review emphasizes the potential of sustainable HRM strategies to dismantle stereotypes, support gender-sensitive policies, and foster a socially responsible workplace that values contributions across all ages. Future research should address regional differences, particularly in Asian and Global South contexts, to better understand how socio-economic factors such as education, job type, and citizenship status influence ageism in diverse workplace settings.

Gender Equality and Decent Work Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review and Future Agenda towards Sustainable Development

This study reviews recent empirical research on gender equality and decent work environments in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), highlighting their vital role in sustainable development. The scoping review encompasses studies published from 2018 to 2024 and credible international reports to depict the current state of SSA. The findings indicate modest advancements in gender equality and decent work in SSA, notably through increased educational opportunities, women’s labor force participation, and legal reforms. For example, gender pay equity in SSA improved slightly, with women earning 40–46 % less than men, and a parity score of 68.4 % in 2024, marking a 0.4 % increase from 2023 and a total improvement of five-percentage-point since 2006. However, challenges persist, such as wage disparities and higher unemployment among young women (27 %) compared to young men (16.9 %). The Gender Inequality Index reflects uneven progress across the region, with some countries like Cabo Verde and Mauritius achieving higher rankings in gender equality, while others, such as Nigeria and Somalia, face systemic barriers such as structural inequalities, weak policy enforcement, and cultural discrimination. Implementation of decent work principles including fair wages, safe working conditions, and social protections also remains inconsistent across SSA. Challenges such as inadequate social protections and limited equitable employment opportunities, hinder socioeconomic development. The study recommends a coordinated approach among governments, organizations, and stakeholders to align SSA’s progress with global gender equity and decent work standards, thereby advancing sustainable development.
