Regarded as a solar myth or as an avatar of the medieval legend of Saint Trophime, historically identified with Gilles de Rais or with Guillaume de Flavy, Perrault’s Bluebeard, ‘the sexually ambiguous’ hero (Mothe), has been simultaneously psychoanalyzed, absolved from his crimes and deemed to be a victim of his wives, but above all he has constantly been transformed by scholars into a good excuse to talk about something else, sometimes even altering the original meaning of the tale. In this paper we propose to show how Perrault was able to intimately blend together, without dissonance or strain, two traditional literary genres: the conte licencieux and the gnomic tale, thus creating a little literary miracle. Zusammenfassung Perraults ‚sexuell suspekter‘ (Mothe) Held wurde als Sonnenmythos oder als Weiterentwicklung der mittelalterlichen Legende von Sainte Trophime betrachtet, mit Gilles de Rais oder Guillaume de Flavy identifiziert, psychoanalytisch gedeutet, von seinen Verbrechen freigesprochen und als Opfer seiner Frauen dargestellt, aber vor allem wurde er fortwährend unter einem glücklichen Vorwand verwandelt, um von etwas anderem zu sprechen, ohne daß seine Interpreten allzu viele Skrupel hatten, dabei den ursprünglichen Sinn zu verfälschen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag soll gezeigt werden, wie es Perrault gelungen ist, ohne Übergriffe und Dissonanzen zwei traditionelle narrative Gattungen zu verschmelzen: die des conte licencieux und die des récit gnomique , indem er ein kleines literarisches Wunder schuf.

The present article reads Georges Bataille’s Procès de Gilles de Rais as an attempt to situate his own writing in the contradictory dynamics of his time haunted by the paradoxes of modernity. The ghosts of the Bluebeard legend hereby serve as a projection of a historization which confronts the uncanny of its fictions Zusammenfassung Der vorliegende Beitrag liest Georges Batailles Procès de Gilles de Rais als Versuch, das eigene Schreiben über die historischen Paradoxien der Frühmoderne im Spannungsfeld seiner Zeit zu situieren. Die Vexierbilder der Blaubart -Legende dienen ihm dabei als Projektionsfläche einer Geschichtsschreibung, die dem Unheimlichen ihrer Denkfiguren Rechnung trägt.

This article discusses the different functions assumed by folktale elements in the works of the marquis de Sade. It shows how the intertextual relationship to Perrault’s tales is to be intended, especially in Rodrigue ou la tour enchantée , a short allegorical tale drawn from the 1800 collection Les Crimes de l’amour . Bluebeard’s forbidden chamber as it appears in Sade’s text represents the criminal past with a difference : entering it causes no bad conscience and implies no regrets. In his interpretation, Sade implicitly presents the Bluebeard tale as a fable of unhappy return of the past and unsuccessful repression of conscience, a paradigm to be repressed in the same way as Sade’s works intend to repress the world of the folktale in general. Zusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag untersucht die verschiedenen Funktionen märchenhafter Elemente im Werk des Marquis de Sade. Besprochen wird, wie die intertextuellen Bezüge zu Perraults Märchen zu verstehen sind, insbesondere in der allegorischen Erzählung Rodrigue ou la tour enchantée , die Sade um 1800 in seinen Crimes de l’amour publizierte. Das verbotene Zimmer bedeutet auch bei Sade eine verbrecherische Vergangenheit, mit einem wichtigen Unterschied: Der Eintritt läßt weder schlechtes Gewissen zu noch zeitigt er Bedauern. Implizit stellt Sade das Märchen von Blaubart als Paradigma für mißglückte Verdrängung, für unglückliche Rückkehr der Vergangenheit dar: Diese Moral gälte es in Sades Werken in gleicher Weise zu unterdrücken wie die übernatürliche Welt der Märchen als Ganzes.

Maurice Maeterlinck develops the Bluebeard tradition in many regards: by linking it with other myths, especially - in a constant play of mirrors - with the mythological model of Ariane, by rethinking some of the traditional elements (the first female victims are not dead but prisoners) or by reworking them in light of symbolist aesthetics (colours, doors with hidden jewelry). The curiosity which Perrault stigmatizes (tongue in cheek) turns into a serious metaphysical inquiry, a real quête du savoir . The underlying structure of Ariane et Barbe-Bleue can be defined as a binary one: a double deliverance responds to a double transgression. As symbolized by the two keys, the plot unveils the double faces both of the female and the male principles. The play contrasts the strong and ‘progressive’ woman, Ariane, with the weak and anxious other wives. Bluebeard, beardless and captured in the end, prevails as far as he can deter his former wives from following Ariane into liberty. Maeterlinck’s version can be considered as a turning point, giving rise to the modern avatars of Bluebeard Zusammenfassung Maurice Maeterlinck entwickelt die Blaubart -Tradition in diversen Aspekten entscheidend weiter: durch den Einbezug mehrerer anderer mythologischer Themen, vor allem mit der Figur der Ariane, aber auch durch die Adaption traditioneller Elemente (die ersten Blaubart- Frauen sind lediglich Gefangene) oder deren poetisch-symbolistischer Ausgestaltung (Farben, Türen mit versteckten Edelsteinen). Die weibliche Neugier, von Perrault noch mit einem Augenzwinkern mißbilligt, wird zu einer metaphysischen Suche des Ursprungs. Die Struktur von Ariane et Barbe-Bleue ist die einer spiegelbildlichen Doppelung: der doppelten Befreiung geht eine zweimalige Mißachtung des Verbots voraus. Die zwei Schlüssel verweisen auf die Janusköpfigkeit des Männlichen und Weiblichen: eine starke und fortschrittliche Ariane kontrastiert mit den schwachen, schemenhaften Frauen. Blaubart, am Ende bartlos und gefangen, behält insoweit die Oberhand, als er seine ersten Frauen zurückzuhalten vermag. This paper shows how two very different complexes of motifs, Pygmalion and Bluebeard , have been combined as poetological figures of reflection in nineteenth century Germanlanguage literature - and how this happens precisely because of their antagonistic design: whereas Pygmalion’s principle of generation implies the animation of the work of art (which is encoded as female) in its entirety, Bluebeard’s blood chamber, where the dead women are stored, can be seen as a museum space; the dead (dismembered) women appear as ‘exhibits’ of his art of killing. Using the examples of F.W. Hackländer’s and E. Marlitt’s Bluebeard tales, it will be shown how the difference between art and entertainment is inscribed in this combination of concepts of authorship Résumé Cet article vise à montrer comment dans la littérature germanophone de la deuxième moitié du XIX siècle, deux ensembles thématiques e très différents, Pygmalion et Barbe-Bleue , se combinent en tant que figures poétologiques, précisément en raison de leur conception antagonique: tandis que le principe d’engendrement chez Pygmalion implique le fait que l’oeuvre d’art (codée au féminin) est rendue vivante dans sa totalité, le cabinet d’horreur de Barbe-Bleue où les femmes mortes sont conservées, peut être compris comme un espace muséal. Les femmes mortes (démembrées) apparaissent comme des ‹ objets d’exposition › de son art de tuer. Les exemples que constituent les contes de Barbe-Bleue par F.W. Hackländer et E. Marlitt aident à comprendre comment la différence entre l’art et le divertissement s’inscrit dans cette combinaison conceptuelle des auteurs.

The radio opera Barbe-Bleue by Jacques Ibert was broadcast by Radio-Lausanne in 1943. Under the same title, an operette by Jean Binet was broadcast in 1940, of which only fragments are preserved. The librettto for both productions was written by William Aguet. In the present article it is shown, especially for the radio opera by Ibert, that the authors understood how to bring political and artistic claims together in this comedy. This is pointed out through a more detailed analysis of the key moment in the forbidden chamber, when the wife of Barbe-Bleue starts to laugh, and through elucidating the role of broadcasting for the spiritual defense of Switzerland during the Second World War. It can be shown that Barbe- Bleue contains at the same time emancipatory ideas about gender relations and a criticalliberal view about the situation during World War II. Résumé En 1943, Radio-Lausanne diffusait l’opéra-bouffe radiophonique Barbe-Bleue de Jacques Ibert. Également sous le titre de Barbe-Bleue , on avait diffusé, en 1940, une opérette radiophonique de Jean Binet dont il ne reste aujourd’hui que des fragments. William Aguet était l’auteur du livret de ces productions. Dans le présent article, on constate, grâce à l’opéra radiophonique d’Ibert en particulier, que les auteurs avaient su inclure dans cette comédie des revendications autant politiques qu’artistiques. Ceci est notamment mis en évidence par une interprétation détaillée de la scène-clé où la femme de Barbe-Bleue se met à rire dans la chambre interdite, mais aussi dans le contexte du rôle de la radio à l’époque de la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale comme ‹ défenseur spirituel › de la Suisse. Il est par là démontré que l’on peut trouver dans Barbe-Bleue à la fois des idées émancipatrices sur les rapports des sexes ainsi qu’un avis critique libéral concernant la situation pendant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale.

In order to illustrate the development of the Bluebeard plot I will focus on a cinematic transformation that unites narrative, semantic as well as aesthetic aspects of the traditional tale and many of its re-workings. A dialogue of meanings, interpretations and representations makes The Silence of the Lambs a highly complex amalgamation of Bluebeard ’s cultural history. At the same time the film serves as a reinterpretation and revision of the familiar story. By introducing references on the one hand, and modifications and modernizations on the other, I will show that Jonathan Demme’s Bluebeard transformation takes core elements of the tale and puts them onto another level. The film combines two variations of the story - La Barbe Bleue and The Robber Bridegroom - but it also incorporates the Gothic, the psychological thriller, and the horror film. Thereby, The Silence of the Lambs brings together genres that have established and developed a certain kind of aesthetics which has its roots in the Bluebeard tale and is carried on by the Sublime and Beautiful of the Gothic as well as the suspense of the thriller. I will close my analysis by illustrating how the quest for meaning, already inherent in the popular tales, continues in transformations such as The Silence of the Lambs - helping to explain the plot’s ongoing transmedial reproduction as well as its lasting presence and fascination. Résumé Afin d’illustrer le développement de l’action de La Barbe Bleue , ma contribution se consacrera à une transformation cinématographique, qui combine des aspects narratifs, sémantiques et esthétiques du conte et de nombre de ses réécritures. Les potentiels de sens, les interprétations et les modes de représentation entrent en dialogue et font du Silence des Agneaux une version à plusieurs niveaux de lecture de La Barbe bleue , qui englobe l’histoire culturelle du sujet. Le film est aussi une réinterprétation et une révision de cette histoire bien connue. En présentant tant les références que les modifications et les actualisations, on expliquera comment Le Silence des Agneaux de Jonathan Demme se sert d’éléments centraux du conte et les développe. Avec La Barbe Bleue et Le fiancé brigand , le film combine en effet deux variations de l’histoire et prend en considération des aspects du roman noir, du thriller psychologique et du film d’horreur. Le Silence des Agneaux combine ainsi des genres qui ont établi et développé une esthétique à partir du conte de La Barbe bleue et perpétuée par le beau et le sublime de la fiction gothique ou encore le suspense du thriller. Pour conclure, ma contribution souhaite expliquer sous quelle forme la recherche du sens, qui faisait déjà partie intégrante du conte de départ, prend se continuation dans une transformation comme Le Silence des Agneaux - ce qui pourrait expliquer le développement transmédial du sujet, sa présence durable et la fascination qu’il exerce. Zusammenfassung Um die Entwicklung des Blaubart -Plots zu veranschaulichen, wird sich mein Beitrag einer filmischen Transformation widmen, die narrative, semantische und ästhetische Aspekte des Märchens und vieler seiner Neuauflagen in sich vereint. Sinnpotentiale, Interpretationen und Darstellungsweisen treten in einen Dialog und machen Das Schweigen der Lämmer zu einer vielschichtigen Blaubart -Transformation, die die Kulturgeschichte des Stoffes in sich trägt. Zugleich dient der Film auch als Neuinterpretation und Revision der vertrauten Geschichte. Indem sowohl Referenzen als auch Modifikationen und Aktualisierungen präsentiert werden, soll erläutert werden, wie sich Jonathan Demmes Schweigen der Lämmer zentraler Elemente des Märchens bedient und diese weiterentwickelt. Dabei kombiniert der Film mit Blaubart und Der Räuberbräutigam zwei Variationen der Geschichte und berücksichtigt zudem Aspekte des Schauerromans, des psychologischen Thrillers und des Horrorfilms. Das Schweigen der Lämmer verknüpft somit Genres, die eine Ästhetik etabliert und weiterent wickelt haben, deren Wurzeln wiederum im Blaubart -Märchen liegen, und von Spielarten wie dem Schönem und dem Sublimen der gothic fiction sowie des suspense im Thriller fortgeführt wurden. Abschließend möchte mein Beitrag erläutern, in welcher Form die Sinnsuche, die bereits elementarer Bestandteil der zugrundeliegenden Märchen war, in Transformationen wie Das Schweigen der Lämmer fortgesetzt wird - ein Aspekt, der dabei hilft, die anhaltende transmediale Stoffentwicklung sowie die beständige Präsenz und Faszination nachzuvollziehen.
