The story of Snow White tells about a young woman's difficulty to separate herself from her mother. Unlike other tales dealing with the fabrication of the feminine, such as Cinderella (ATU 510 A), Donkey Skin (ATU 510 B) or The Maiden without Hands (ATU 706), the heroine's birth is preceded by the mother's wish for a beautiful child. Through this wish, she becomes endowed with three basic coulours (white, red and black) calling to undertake an initiatory journey. In the tale's language, Snow White's mother thus wishes for a child wearing colours which will make her pass through the realm of darkness. Unlike other protagonists of the tale of magic, Snow White is therefore persecuted by a mother who works for her death. After the marriage to a charming prince (her resuscitator), the heroine's pregnancy and childbirth inevitably recall the mother to the scene of action. The villain kills her daughter and takes her place. In its South European forms, the tale merges with The Black and the White Bride (ATU 403), leading to the young woman's death, which is represented as a changeover to a previous stage of creation. The heroine passes through the world of the birds, fishes and trees. Her rebirth is staged outside the maternal womb. She will revive by another way than by her mother's body in order to live without her, henceforth reunified by her passage through the cycles of previous lives.   Zusammenfassung Die Geschichte Schneewittchens erzählt von den Schwierigkeiten einer jungen Frau, sich von ihrer Mutter zu lösen. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Frauenmärchen, wie Aschenputtel (ATU 510 A), Allerleirauh (ATU 510 B) oder Das Mädchen ohne Hände (ATU 706), geht der Geburt der Heldin hier der Wunsch der Mutter nach einem schönen Kind voraus. Durch diesen Wunsch wird sie mit drei Grundfarben ausgestattet (weiß, rot und schwarz), die zu einer Initiationsreise rufen. In der Sprache des Märchens wünscht sich Schneewittchens Mutter also ein Mädchen, dessen Farben eine Reise durch das Reich der Finsternis auslösen. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Zaubermärchenheldinnen wird Schneewittchen von einer Mutter verfolgt, die auf ihren Tod hinarbeitet. Nach der Heirat mit dem Prinzen (der sie wiederbelebt hat) wird die mütterliche Verfolgerin durch Schneewittchens Schwangerschaft und Entbindung wieder auf den Plan gerufen. Sie bringt Schneewittchen um und nimmt seine Stelle an der Seite des Gatten ein. In südeuropäischen Formen kontaminiert die Erzählung mit dem Erzähltyp Die schwarze und die weiβe Braut (ATU 403), der zum Tod der jungen Frau führt. Dieser wird als Rückkehr in ein früheres Schöpfungsstadium dargestellt. Die Heldin durchläuft die Welt der Vögel, Fische und Bäume. Ihre Neugeburt vollzieht sich außerhalb des Mutterschoßes. Sie findet auf andere Weise als über den Mutterleib ins Leben zurück und hat nun mit ihrer Reise durch frühere Zyklen des Lebens die eigene Einheit gefunden.

This paper analyzes the tale-type Snow White (AaTh/ATU 709) in the folk tradition of West and South Slavs, which preserves different versions of this tale. AaTh/ATU 709 is found among all West and South Slavic groups, with the exception of Kashubians from the vicinity of Gdańsk, Polabians, a minority (now extinct) in Germany, and the South Slavs in Montenegro. The paper examines the characteristics of the tales, both from the aspect of their contents and meaning as well as their imagery, reflecting social rituals, transition rites, regional and cultural characteristics, and temporal and spatial aspects that have been preserved in them. These tales emphasize the role of the mother, which seems to be a contrasting (mirror) image of the midwinter deity. Interesting elements in the Slavic Snow White tales are the temporary dwelling of the heroine and the creatures with which the girl finds shelter, their number and their appearance, which vary considerably. The motif of the heroine's marriage to the chieftain of these men who live in the forest may be connected with the custom of the false marriage: it had a protective function which served to ensure a happy marriage with the right man. While the many layers of this fairy-tale remain hidden to the average reader, its multifarious variants exhibit regional peculiarities and elements from local history. Influences from Central European, East Slavic, Mediterranean and Oriental, especially Turkish traditions can be traced throughout the texts. Résumé Les traditions orales des Slaves de l'Ouest et du Sud ont toutes conservé leurs versions de Blanche-Neige (AaTh/ATU 709). Seul dans le folklore des Cachoubes des environs de Dantzig, des Polabes (minorité désormais disparue en Allemagne) et des Monténégrins, on ne trouve pas de variantes de ce conte. La présente contribution analyse ses caractéristiques du point de vue du message émis par le contenu et de la métaphore qui reflète les rites de passage, ainsi que l'aspect du temps et de l'espace. On fera ressortir le rôle de la mère en tant que l'image de contraste (le reflet) de la déesse de l'hiver. Dans les contes slaves, notre attention est attirée aussi par l'abri temporaire de la jeune fille. Le nombre et l'aspect des hommes chez lesquels elle se cache diffèrent. Toutefois, ils ne semblent être qu'une métaphore des concepts temporels et spatiaux. Le motif du mariage de la jeune fille avec le chef des hommes de la forêt semble être lié au thème du faux mariage qui avait la fonction préventive d'assurer la réalisation d'un mariage heureux avec le vrai élu. La complexité du conte reste normalement cachée au lecteur, tandis qu'il est plus facile de découvrir, tout le long du texte, des influences qu'ont exercées les civilisations de l'Europe centrale, les Slaves de l'Est, les civilisations méditerranéennes ou orientales. Zusammenfassung Die Autorin befaßt sich mit dem Schneewittchen -Märchen (AaTh/ATU 709) in der Erzählüberlieferung der West- und Südslaven. Die Märchen dieses Typus sind überall erhalten geblieben, nur in Montenegro, bei den Kaschuben aus der Danziger Umgebung und bei den in Deutschland ausgestorbenen Polaben konnte man sie nicht feststellen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden die Eigenschaften dieses Märchens sowohl vom Standpunkt der inhaltlichen Aussagekraft und der märchenhaften Symbolik, in der sich gesellschaftliche Rituale, Übergangsbräuche und zeitliche und räumliche Aspekte widerspiegeln, als auch der regionalen und kulturellen Verflechtungen untersucht. Bei den behandelten Märchen ist die Rolle der Mutter hervorgehoben; sie scheint das Spiegelbild (Kontrastbild) der Mittwinterfrau zu sein. In den slawischen Märchen sind vor allem die vorübergehende Wohnstätte und die Wesen, bei welchen das Mädchen ihre Unterkunft findet, auffällige Elemente; sowohl deren Zahl als auch ihre Gestalt sind sehr vielfältig und scheinen als Metapher für räumliche oder zeitliche Konzepte zu dienen. Das Motiv der Heirat des Mädchens mit dem Anführer der im Wald lebenden Männer scheint mit dem Brauch der präventiven falschen Trauung verbunden zu sein; diese sollte eine vorbeugende Wirkung haben, um eine glückliche Ehe mit dem richtigen Auserwählten zu ermöglichen. Während die Vielschichtigkeit des Märchens dem Durchschnittsleser verborgen bleibt, sind kulturhistorische und regionale Einflüsse offensichtlicher. Diese werden in den behandelten südund westslavischen Märchen durch mitteleuropäische, ostslavische und mediterrane oder orientalische bzw. türkische Elemente repräsentiert.

The article studies sixteen Romance language versions of tale-type ATU 709 that present the same initial motif: the heroine is the daughter or step-daughter of a beautiful innkeeper. This motif determines the development of the tale and conveys a more realistic character to its versions, unlike what happens in other ones that contain greater doses of fantasy. In the study, an analysis of the tale's structure leads to the observation that all versions rely on the repetition of a basic structural pattern, which can develop in three surroundings: the family home, the thieves' house and the prince's home. The description of the motifs and actions taking place in these environments is followed by reflections on the importance of the structure and the contents for an analysis of the tale's meaning. Résumé L'article examine seize versions romanes du conte-type ATU 709 qui présentent le même motif introductif: la heroïne est la fille ou la belle-fille d'une belle tavernière. Ce motif est déterminant pour le développement du conte et lui confère un certain réalisme, à la différence d'autres versions qui contiennent une dose de fantaisie plus élevée. Dans l'étude, l'analyse de la structure du conte mène à l'observation que les versions sont construites à partir de la répétition d'un modèle structural élémentaire qui peut se développer dans trois environnements: le foyer familial, la maison des voleurs et la maison du prince. La description des motifs et des actions qui ont lieu dans ces environnements est suivie d'une réfléction sur l'importance de la structure et du contenu pour l'analyse de la signification du conte. Zusammenfassung Der Aufsatz untersucht sechzehn romanische Versionen des Erzähltyps ATU 709, die dasselbe Eingangsmotiv haben: die Heldin ist die Tochter oder Stieftochter einer schönen Wirtin. Dieses Motiv bestimmt den Fortgang des Märchens und verleiht ihm einen gewissen Realismus, der im Gegensatz zu anderen, mit einer größeren Dosis Phantasie gewürzten Fassungen steht. Eine Analyse der Erzählstruktur führt zu der Beobachtung, daß alle Varianten auf der Wiederholung einer Grundstruktur beruhen, die sich in drei verschiedenen Umgebungen entwickelt: dem Heim der Familie, dem Haus der Diebe und dem Heim des Prinzen. Auf eine Beschreibung der sich dort entwickelnden Motive und Handlungen folgen Überlegungen zur Bedeutung von Struktur und Inhalt für den Sinn der Erzählung.

It is not least due to the translation by Elek Benedek (1859–1929) that stories from the Grimms' Household Tales , such as Snow White , are very popular in Hungary. The composition and the structure are in most cases preserved; however, the rural storytellers enrich their tales by adding personal commentaries and details of their own invention as well as rhythmical parts and verses. Moreover, other than in the Grimm story where the antagonist is Snow White's stepmother, it is most often the heroine's own mother who appears in the role of the villain. An even more important difference make the helpers who according to Hungarian tradition are in the majority of cases robbers, giants, hunters, etc. Humorous and witty remarks by the tellers contribute to the special flavour of this tale-type in Hungary. Résumé Ce n'est pas en dernier lieu dû à la traduction d'Elek Benedek (1859–1929) que des contes de la collection des frères Grimm, dont Blanche-Neige , sont très populaires en Hongrie. La composition et la structure sont dans la plupart des cas conservées; cependant, les conteurs champêtres enrichissent leurs contes en ajoutant des détails inventés et des commentaires personnelles ainsi que des parties rhythmiques ou poétiques intercalées. En outre, l'antagoniste n'est le plus souvent pas la belle-mère de Blanche-Neige, comme dans la version des Grimm, mais la propre mère de l'héroïne. Une variation encore plus importante est constituée par les hôtes de la belle fille persécutée qui sont surtout des brigands, des géants, des chasseurs, etc. Des remarques pleines d'humour assaisonnent ce conte très apprécié en Hongrie.

This paper discusses the three different groups of versions of the international tale type of Snow White in Africa: Arabian versions in North and East Africa, versions similar to oral Portuguese traditions in former Portuguese colonies and a mixture of Grimm derived texts and oral traditions from Southern Europe in Namibia. They are compared with an African tale that shares with them the same basic topic: the attacks on the life of an innocent, beautiful girl. This comparison shows the differences between European and African magic tales and at the same time proves that a certain type of ancient African tales can be classified as magic tales as well. The analysis of the African tale sheds light on certain traits of the European tale. Résumé Le présent article examine les trois groupes de variantes du conte-type international de Blanche-Neige en Afrique: les versions arabes en Afrique du Nord et de l'Est, les versions ressemblant aux traditions orales du Portugal dans les anciennes colonies de ce pays ainsi que des textes qui mélangent la version Grimm avec des traditions orales sud-européennes en Namibie. Elles sont comparées avec un conte africain basé sur le même thème fondamental: l'attentat contre la vie d'une jeune fille belle et innocente. Cette comparaison montre les différences entre les contes merveilleux européens et les contes magiques africains et indique en même temps qu'un certain genre d'anciens contes africains peut aussi être classé parmi les contes merveilleux. D'autre part, l'analyse du conte africain peut contribuer à l'élucidation de certain traits du conte européen. Zusammenfassung Der Aufsatz diskutiert die drei verschiedenen Redaktionen des internationalen Erzähltyps Schneewittchen in Afrika: arabische Formen in Nord- und Ostafrika, der mündlichen portugiesischen Überlieferung nahestehende Formen in den ehemaligen portugiesischen Kolonien und eine Vermischung des Grimm-Texts mit einer aus den südeuropäischen Ländern bekannten mündlichen Fassung in Namibia. Diese werden einer afrikanischen Geschichte gegenübergestellt, die das gleiche Grundthema behandelt: die Angriffe auf das Leben eines unschuldigen schönen Mädchens. Ein Vergleich weist die Unterschiede zwischen den europäischen und afrikanischen Märchen auf und zeigt gleichzeitig, daß eine bestimmte Art von altafrikanischen Märchen auch als Zaubermärchen klassifiziert werden kann. Andererseits erhellt die Analyse des afrikanischen Märchens gewisse Züge des europäischen Märchens.

Snow White is usually held to be of European origin, as most of its variants appear in Europe. However, we found a number of versions in Central Asia and Eastern Siberia, among Mongolic and adjacent Turkic and Tungusic peoples, which can hardly be traced back to European influence. Except for one Mongolian and one (as such unrecognizable) Daghur variant, none of these texts have so far been registered in any typological index. Here, we shall deal especially with a long variant from the Daghurs, a Mongolic people living in China's northernmost Heilongjiang province and Inner Mongolia. Prior to the middle of the seventeenth century, the Daghurs settled north of the Middle Amur, on a vast territory known in Russia to this day as Dauriya. The gist of the Daghur variant which we give in a full German rendering is as follows: The hunter Zhaos Mergen lives together with his younger sister Zhanglîhuâ Katô and his three wives. He gives his most precious furs and the best meat to his sister who lives in a wooden tower. This raises the envy of two of his wives who plan to kill her sister-in-law by making an ancle bone fall into her throat. The apparently dead sister is placed into an ovenbed-chest; two stags draw her into the wilderness. The chest falls down in front of a house where an old couple named Atirkân and Etirkên live. These names (of Evenki origin) are designations for the she-bear and the he-bear used by Daghur hunters. The old couple treat Zhanglîhuâ Katô as if she were their own child. Soon, a young hunter falls in love with Zhanglîhuâ Katô. During their wedding the new husband becomes so enraged by his wife's unresponsiveness that he strikes her. This brings her back to life, the crime is cleared up, and the two sisters-in-law are put to death. The three sequences of 1) isolation in a tower, 2) temporary death and sojourn in the otherworld with mysterious new parents and 3) return to life and subsequent marriage suggest a premarital rite de passage . The Grimm version and East Slavic variants of Snow White have already been interpreted within the frame of the female initiation scenario (N. J. Girardot, R. Becker). According to these authors the structure of the rite de passage (preliminal, liminal, and post-liminal phases) and the general theme of maturity are shared by the ritual and the maerchen . Most probably, the falling into oblivion of a once widespread ritual has led to the creation of the narrative as a re-interpretation of the ritual. It cannot be excluded that European, in particular Russian influence may have played a part in the creation of this Central Asiatic tale. However, the tale is also part and parcel of several apparently ancient Mongolic and Turkic epics, for instance Buryat epics which do not seem to depend on a Russian folktale. A possible adaptation to the context of medieval Christian Europe is not too difficult to imagine. The Central Asiatic versions also show that the stepmother-stepdaughter conflict is not original to this tale. Some Caucasian versions appear to be related to the Central Asiatic ones (the ‘prototype’ of Snow White ). An Abkhaz version is part of the Abkhaz Nart epics. In addition, we found an Ossetian version. Mongolian influence on the Nart epics is well-known and has been explained through the role of the Alans as mediators (T.A. Guriev). This has made us suspect a possible Alanic role in the transmission of the tale to Europe, too, as Alanic groups have not only migrated to Hungary and Rumania, but also to Central Europe.   Résumé Le conte de Blanche-Neige est généralement considéré comme d'origine européenne, car la plupart des variantes sont attestées en Europe. Cependant, quelques versions ont été trouvées en Asie centrale et en Sibérie orientale, chez les Mongols et des peuples turcs et toungouses voisinants, et il serait difficile de les attribuer à l'influence européenne. À l'exception d'une variante mongole et d'une variante daghoure (non reconnaissable comme telle), ces textes n'ont été répertoirés dans aucun index typologique jusque là. Ici on étudiera surtout une longue variante daghoure. Les Daghours sont un peuple mongol qui habite la province de Heilongjiang au nord extrême de la Chine et la Mongolie-Intérieure. Avant le milieu du XVII e siècle, ils s'établissaient au nord de la partie moyenne du cours de l'Amour, dans un vaste territoire appelé Daouriya (Daourie) en Russie jusqu'à ce jour. Dans cette variante daghoure qui est rendue en traduction allemande intégrate, les séquences 1) isolation dans une tour, 2) mort temporaire et séjour dans un autre monde chez de nouveaux parents mystérieux et 3) retour à la vie, suivi d'un mariage rappellent un rite de passage prénuptial, et plus particulièrement l'initiation féminine à la maturité. La version des frères Grimm ainsi que des variantes provenant des Slaves de l'Est ont déjà été interprétérs dans le cadre d'un scénario d'initiation féminine (N.J. Girardot, R. Becker). Ces auteurs ont souligné que la structure tripartite du rite de passage (séparation, transition, agrégation) se retrouve dans le conte. Il est à supposer que l'oubli d'un rituel naguère courant a amené la création du conte daghour et sa réinterprétation du rituel. La déchéance du rite pourrait avoir été causé par la dominance des structures guerrières et patrilinéaires dans les états médiévaux belliqueux en Asie centrale. Il n'est pas tout à fait impossible que l'influence européenne, surtout russe, pourrait avoir joué un rôle concernant l'origine de ce conte daghour. Cependant, le conte fait aussi part de plusieurs épopées mongoles et turques, apparemment très anciennes et pleines d'éléments mythiques; et dans le cas des épopées bouriates, par exemple, il est difficilement concevable qu'elles auraient été influencées par un conte russe. Par contre, il est imaginable que le conte étudié ici se serait adapté au milieu chrétien du moyen âge européen. Les versions d'Asie centrale montrent également que le conflit entre marâtre et belle-fille ne représente pas un élément originaire de ce conte. À notre avis, quelques versions caucasiennes sont apparentées à celles de l'Asie centrale (le ‘prototype’ de Blanche-Neige ). Une version abkhaze fait part des épopées akhazes sur les Nartes. Il existe aussi une version ossète. L'influence mongole sur les épopées des Nartes est connue et a été expliquée par le rôle médiateur des Alans (T.A. Guriev) ce qui nous fait supposer qu'ils auraient aussi pu avoir joué un rôle dans la transmission du conte à l'Europe, car des groupes alanes n'ont pas seulement atteint l'Hongrie et la Roumanie, mais aussi l'Europe centrale.

The article explores the literary history of Snow White , from the supposed predecessors of the tale to the first full variants which emerged between 1782 and 1833 in Germany and Russia, including some later offshoots that appeared before the Grimms' tale had become canonic. In an attempt to establish possible interdependencies, these early forms of Snow White are related to each other and to cognate folk narratives. Significantly, the first specimen of the tale-type ever printed, Musäus' Richilde , is a playful adaptation, whereas the other early variants appear to be widely independent. Résumé Le présent article trace l'histoire littéraire de Blanche-Neige , de ses prétendues formes premières aux versions proprement dites qui, entre 1782 et 1833, voyaient le jour en Allemagne et en Russie; on considérera également quelques dérivés publiés avant la constitution de la version Grimm comme forme canonique. Afin de vérifier les interdépendances qui pourraient exister, on mettra ces versions en relation, non seulement entre elles, mais aussi avec des contes populaires apparentés. II s'avère que la première version du contetype qui avait été publiée, le conte Richilde par Johann Karl August Musäus, est une adaptation ludique tandis que les variantes de Blanche-Neige qui suivaient se revèlent largement indépendantes. Zusammenfassung Untersucht wird die Literaturgeschichte des Schneewittchen -Märchens, von angeblichen Vorläufern bis zu den ersten eigentlichen Fassungen in deutscher und russischer Sprache, die aus der Zeit von 1782 bis 1833 datieren; einbezogen werden ferner einige Adaptationen, die erschienen, bevor sich die Version der Brüder Grimm als kanonisch etabliert hatte. Zur Erkennung möglicher Wechselwirkungen werden die frühen Schneewittchen -Varianten zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt sowie mit verwandten Märchen aus mündlicher Überlieferung verglichen. Es ist bezeichnend, daß der erste Nachweis des Schneewittchen -Märchens, die Erzählung Richilde von Johann Karl August Musäus, eine spielerische Umformung darstellt, während die anderen frühen Quellen sich als weitgehend unabhängig voneinander erweisen.
