This paper presents a functional system architecture for an “autonomous vehicle” in the sense of a modular building block system. It is developed in a top-down approach based on the definition of the functional requirements for an autonomous vehicle and explicitly combines perception-based and localization-based approaches. Both the definition and the functional system architecture consider the aspects operating by the human being, mission accomplishment, map data, localization, environmental and self-perception as well as cooperation. The functional system architecture is developed in the context of the research project “Stadtpilot” at the Technische Universität Braunschweig.

Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel adressiert die klare Definition von Begrifflichkeiten für die unterschiedlichen Stufen der Automatischen Fahrzeugführung. Er illustriert eine stufenweise Einführungsstrategie ausgehend von teilautomatischen Funktionen (Stau- & Park-Assistent), gefolgt von automatischen Funktionen, bei denen sich der Fahrer unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen von der Fahraufgabe abwenden darf (Stau-Chauffeur, Autobahn-Chauffeur). Ebenfalls aufgezeigt werden technische Herausforderungen sowie Status und Weiterarbeit zur Anpassung der rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen.

Advanced driver assistance systems already help drivers reach their destinations safely and more comfortably. Future systems will evolve from driver assistance over highly automated vehicles to fully automated driving. With an increasing level of automation, automated functions will reduce the driver's burden more and more, thereby creating space for productivity, communication or entertainment while driving. In this article we outline our roadmap for future automated vehicles, assess the key challenges for introduction and give an overview of the major algorithmic components.

Automated Driving is the key technology for greater safety, comfort and efficiency in personal transportation. Motion Control ensures that the high-level behavior planning is carried out properly even in case of failures and disturbances. Based on the flatness property a feedforward trajectory control is obtained to ensure lateral motion along prescribed trajectories. An optimal state feedback control reduces the effects of disturbances like side wind or road bank to a minimum.

Zusammenfassung In vielen kritischen Verkehrssituationen kann eine Kollision nicht durch alleiniges Bremsen vermieden werden. Insbesondere bei plötzlich den Fahrkorridor betretenden Fußgängern reicht der Bremsweg häufig nicht aus, um rechtzeitig zum Stehen zu kommen. Aus diesem Grund wird ein Trajektorienoptimierungsalgorithmus als wichtiger Teil einer automatischen Ausweichassistenz vorgeschlagen, welcher auf der Optimalsteuerungstheorie basiert. Mittels einer geeignet gewählten Zustands- und Zeittransformation wird die Suche nach einer passenden Ausweichtrajektorie als ein linear-quadratisches Optimierungsproblem formuliert. Dessen Lösung kann entsprechend der Vorgehensweise der Riccati-Zustandsregelung für endliche Optimierungshorizonte äußerst effizient berechnet werden, was eine Implementierung auf Automobil-Seriensteuergeräten mit Zykluszeiten im Millisekundenbereich ermöglicht. Der Funktionsnachweis erfolgt anhand eines im Realversuch nachgestellten Fußgängerszenarios.

This paper analyzes and evaluates alternative options for action and earliest possible dates for intervention for an automated safety function to avoid or mitigate collisions in priority situations in which the right of way regulations are violated by the crossing road users. Based on a simulation of the collision avoidance strategies, the potential safety benefits could be predicted.
