At May 27th 2013 the second new library building (Hörsaal und Medienzentrum) of the Technical University of Darmstadt was opened after a two years construction period only. Nearly exact half a year after the opening of the new central library in the inner part of the city the comprehensive reconstruction of the universities library system came to an end. After a planning and construction period of in total 10 years central units were established at both campuses of the university, which offer multidisciplinary functions and the relationship with the city in different ways.

The library for social sciences and psychology is the third large branch library, which was built as part of the process of a total renewal of the Goethe-University of Frankfurt. The library is part of the building for the departments for social and educational sciences as well as psychology. After a construction period of in total four years the building opened at the beginning of 2013. With 470 work stations and a capacity for about 500.000 books, the library is primarily responsible for nearly 10.000 students and 300 scientists. But as part of the university’s library system it can also be used by the general public.

This article describes digitization processes for various e-routines at Halle University and State Library. In that context the role and importance of structure data for net publications are highlighted. A cost estimate of the digitization routines is provided with special regard to the pilot phase of the project “Digitization and Cataloguing of 18th century prints in Germany” (VD 18, the German National Bibliography of 18th century books). The results are derived from a cost-performance analysis that ran parallel to the project in order to permit a comparison of the results achieved in different technical settings as well as to provide a cost estimate for the whole project on the basis of data derived from best-practice routines.
