Abstract
This chapter focuses on children and young people’s access to inappropriate content online. The aim is to provide a description of the empirical evidence available within the EU Kids Online network, and where appropriate within the wider literature, regarding inappropriate material encountered by children online. The review focuses on (a) pornographic, violent, and gruesome content; (b) racist material; and (c) self-harm-related material. Country, socio-economic, and age differences in the likelihood of access and in coping strategies used by children are considered.
