5 Scotland: Fife Council’s community social work team

Abstract

This chapter offers a recent example of the early development of a community social work team in Scotland. With contributions from staff and community members, it explores in depth the dynamic involved in the bottom-up creation of a service that started in a Scottish town suffering from the effects of post-industrialisation. Endemic poverty and alienation spurred some imaginative and creative forms of support, as well as a partnership between team members, community members and allied agencies within the local council and the third sector. Social work skills were central to the community development approach of the team.
