One The transformation of the welfare state? The Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government and social policy
-
und
Abstract
This chapter considers the coalition government and the relationship between the two parties and their policies. It traces the development of the views and approaches within the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties and the government as a whole and assesses the extent to which each party was successful in pushing its own agenda. The chapter draws upon a framework reflecting a number of political dimensions, including citizenship and public expenditure, in order to analyse the Coalition government’s policies and rhetoric, and argues that in most respects the Coalition government exhibited a range of characteristics and policies that were very similar to those of the New Right-influenced Thatcher governments.
