GH4 is burnt in air to yield a powder which partly dissolves in the form of small colloidal particles in an acetone/cyclohexane mixture. The particles consist of 73% germanium and 27% oxygen. Upon etching with hydrofluoric acid, the particles acquire a blue or blue-green luminescence. The blue-luminescent particles contain no noticeable amount of oxygen and are strongly agglomerated. The luminescence is explained by size quantization of the electronic energy levels. The particles move in an electric field to the anode to form a very thin layer, which, after switching to cathodic polarization, develops a red photo-luminescence, which has a life time of a few ns. This electro-assisted photo-luminescence is gated by the potential of the electrode.
