Structure of the 1,7-bis(dimethylamino)heptamethinium dye in crystals of the picrate salt

Abstract
The title compound C11H19N2 · C6H2N3O7 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a = 778.9(3) pm, b = 1349.4(3) pm, c = 1950.7(3) pm, β = 101.10(2)°, Z = 4 and Dx = 1.345g · cm−3.R = 0.076 for 2458 unique reflections with I > 2σ(I) at 294 K. The π-system of the dye cation is polarized by intermolecular interactions resulting in a bond length alternation. Stacks of dye molecules, which corresponds to J-aggregate structures could not be found.
