Abstract

The crystal structures of the title compounds (3) and (4) have been determined. (3): P21/c, a = 13.765(2), b = 6.012(1), c = 18.780(3) Å, β = 102.34(2)°, Z = 4, R = 0.038 for 2145 unique observed reflections. The ground state extension to 1.468 Ă of the bond to the leaving group (with respect to acetal hydrolysis) occurs without assistance from the lone pair electrons of the ring oxygen, since the endocyclic acetal bond length is unaffected. (4): P21/n, a = 12.989(3), b = 6.512(2), c = 18.701(5) Å, β = 97.23(2)°, Z = 4, R = 0.056 for 1739 unique observed reflections. This ring-opened isomer of (3) shows no ground state features connected with the ready transannular cyclisation.
