Abstract

As shown by x-ray diffraction powder patterns and least-squares positional refinement, the recently found phase In5Bi3 is isotypic with Cr5B3 (T2 type) with a large tetragonal unit cell: a = 8.544 Å and c = 12.68 Å. In5Bi3 is the first B-metal representative of this structure type. The axial ratio c/a = 1.484 is the smallest observed for the Cr5B3 type; the atomic positions deviate significantly from those in Cr5B3.
