Ordnung/Unordnung und Ultrarotabsorption III. Die Systeme MgAl2O4–A12O3 und MgAl2O4–LiAl5O8
Abstract
The absorptions of natural MgAl2O4 spinels which have been heated to various temperatures suggest that a structural change takes place between 800° and 900°. A decrease in the lattice constant of 0.004 Å occurs at the same temperature. Comparisons between the absorptions of LiAl5O8 with ordered and disordered Li/Al distribution lead us to conclude that the Mg/Al distribution in MgAL2O4 is also dependent on temperature. Natural crystals which have not been heated above 800° show a well ordered (normal) distribution of the cations among the tetrahedral and octahedral voids. Natural crystals which have been heated to 900° or more and synthetic crystals have a rather disordered distribution. Hitherto it has neither been possible to reconvert heated natural spinels into the original state of the natural material nor to convert synthetic spinels into the latter.
