Abstract

At Aesch. Ag. 723 the main difficulty of the transmitted text πολέα δ’ ἕσχ’ ἐν α’γκάλαις is not aroused by the intransitive construction of ἔχειν, which finds parallels both in earlier poetry and in tragic authors, but, as Rauchenstein, Fraenkel and others have pointed out, by the tense of the verb, which cannot express the durative aspect of the action (the lion’s cub staying in the arms of the inhabitants of the house). Many editors have accepted Casaubon’s conjecture ἔσκ’, or Dorat’s less persuasive rearrangement of the phrase πολέα δ’ ἔσχ’ … φαιδρωπὸν … σαίνοντα γαστρὸς α’νάγκαις. It is possible however to rescue at least partially the transmitted verb in the requested imperfect tense by writing πολέα δ’ εἶχ’ ἐν α’γκάλαις.
