Abstract

A Heroogonia appears as a work of Hesiod – distinct from the Catalogue of Women – in the ‘Proclus’ Prolegomena to Works and Days . Differently from what is generally believed, John Tzetzes, not Proclus, is the author of this list of Hesiodic works and likely of the title Heroogonia . The latter derives from the periphrasis heroike genealogia , which Tzetzes read in the Prolegomena vetera , mentioned together with the Catalogue . Tzetzes employed the same periphrasis quoting Hesiodic hexameters of genealogical content (belonging to the Catalogue ). This shows that he knew of a Hesiodic work about heroic genealogies and that he considered it distinct from the Catalogue of Women , which he never mentioned – except in the Prolegomena list.
